CHAPTER 9
Charlotte's POV
"Hey Charlotte!"
I looked up from the book I was reading to see that it was Lara, so I smiled and greeted back. "How was your weekend?" she asked and slipped into the seat right beside mine. "The usual, homework and home stuff," I shrugged.
"I didn't see you in last period yesterday, where were you?"
Yesterday? That was when Daniel and I lost track of time during lunch time.
"Alright, we'll go through the plan one more time," he said. I nodded while nibbling the last few bites of my sandwich. He went on with it thoroughly without realising the bell had rung. I knew I was late so I came through the back and not the front, where Lara and I would have sat.
"I was late, so I sat at the back," I stated.
"Late? Well, I saved a spot for you. Also, I don't have your number. It would have been easier if I did," she said and her hands went to her pockets for her phone.
"It would be easier if you did?" I asked as if I was questioning my question.
"Yeah?" she replied, giving me a weird look.
'Opps, didn't know that,' I thought to myself. The teacher came in soon after and the lesson went on.
"Okay class, solve the equations from page 22-24 by tomorrow and be prepared because you may... or may not have a pop quiz!" Mr Arthur said, causing the students to let out a loud sigh.
"Okay then, that's it for today," he continued and the class slowly dispersed into the hallway while I took my time to pack.
"I hate quizzes," I muttered to myself.
"Me too," Lara echoed.
'I really need to control when I should and should not speak,' I scolded myself. Someday this is really going to backfire and I am sure to regret.
I let out a forced laugh causing her to look at me as if I had grown a third head.
"You're not really good with people, are you?" she said.
I gulped because the only thought that was going through my head was, 'What should I say?' over and over again. I decided to play safe and said, "I guess?"
She gave me a soft chuckle, "You should join me for lunch. I'll introduce you to my group of friends. I'm sure they'd love to meet you."
"No thanks, I-I mean I'm meeting up with someone for lunch," I said quickly saving myself from sounding too rude.
"Oh really? Anyway, I'll get going first, alright? See you tomorrow!" she waved and dissolved into the crowd outside.
After she left, I grabbed my bag and headed to the cafeteria. I immediately spotted Daniel sitting at our usual place. As if he had a sixth sense, he looked up and made eye contact with me and I knew something was different.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He looked up at me and pouted, "Feed me."
I furrowed my eyebrows together in confusion, "What?"
He sniffed, "I left my wallet at home and I'm hungry."
I gave a defeated sigh, "Alright."
His eyes lit up and I could not tell if I was imagining it or not because I thought I saw two furry ears pop up from his head. I must have been watching too much anime.
Even though I was willing to pay for his lunch, I knew I would not do that without me benefiting something, so I added, "Only if I get to choose what you get to eat."
"Trust me," I said mocking him from yesterday, "I'll feed until you would not want to be fed ever again."
His expression immediately did a one eighty because he knew what was coming for him. I gave him an evil grin and laugh. "Come on, let's go queue."
He got up following me like a lost puppy. "Could you go easy on me?" he said while we were lining up. I replied him with a laugh. We both knew very well that our cafeteria serves some of the most disgusting looking cooked food.
"I'll try my best," I teased causing him to groan, obviously regretting.
"Let's see, I'll go with my usual," I said grabbing a tuna sandwich and a bottle of Gatorade.
"As for you, you're going to get that and the soup of the day," I pointed to the pasta with obviously too much Prego sauce. "And because I'm such in a good mood, you can pick one more of your own," I said looking up at him.
He was clearly not concentrating to what I was saying and I knew why. He was glaring at the person right beside him as if he was a threat.
"Daniel?"
He snapped back to me and said, "I'll just go with that then."
I decided to fool around a little bit and 'accidentally' pushed my tray too hard hitting the one beside it. It knocked his bottled drink, causing it to fall off the tray, "Sorry," I apologized.
He gave me a hand gesture which probably meant 'It's alright' and bent down to pick it up. I stared at him trying to get a good look of him.
'Black eyes, very suspicious,' I thought to myself.
It was then he started to notice what I was doing and stared back. I could feel the glare from Daniel again and this time that guy noticed too. I felt the sudden tension between them but fortunately, the lunch lady called for Mr Black Eyes as it was his turn to pay.
"What was that?" I asked after we got out of line, but did not get an answer.
"Charlotte!"
My head snapped to the sound of my name and I saw Lara with her bunch of friends.
"I'll head back to the table first," he said, monotonously and left before I could reply.
"Oh hi," I said.
"Is that who you were talking about earlier?" she nodded her head at the direction Daniel was heading.
I let out a force laugh, "Uh, yeah. Sorry, but I got to go so I wouldn't want to be late for next period again."
"Okay, bye!"
I smiled back in return and headed to where Daniel was. When I got there, I slammed my tray a little too hard on the table and said, "So?"
He knew what I meant but still would not answer me. I was about to snap at him but he was quick enough to snap at me first, "Just don't, alright?"
