CHAPTER 26
Charlotte's POV
I woke up fairly early in the morning with a single thought in my head and it was that I needed to see Daniel. I got myself ready and rang him up. "Hello?" a groggy voice answered.
"It's Charlotte. Can I come over?" I asked.
"It's eight in the morning!" he whined. As I was grabbing my things ready to leave I said, "The sun's up and you should be awake by now."
"But it's a Saturday!" he whined some more. I needed to put on my shoes so I placed my phone on the ground with him on loud speaker. I did not give him a reply because I knew he was just going to respond with another excuse.
"Hello? Are you still there?" he asked a moment later.
There was a few seconds of silence before he said, "Fine, you can come over."
"Great, I'm on my way out now. See you soon," I said and hung up.
Daniel sighed, rubbing his face when he opened the door. "Hi," I said. He sighed once more and grumbled, "Morning."
"Wait in the living room. I'll be there in a second," he told me and left for his room.
Of course me being me, I was not going to just sit around and do nothing while waiting so I sat on the sofa until he shut his door. As soon as he did, I got up and headed to his study table by the window. It was cleaner than before and this time I easily spotted familiar brown files on the table.
I flipped one open and realised it was Thompson's file. I went through the very familiar content when suddenly a yellow coloured folder behind all the papers caught my eye. I knew it was a new addition. I assumed that it was there because Daniel was doing his homework.
I very quickly went through the papers inside when the contents inside made my eyes furrowed. There was a picture that was too gory to describe.
According to the description, her name was Emily Ashby W. Murdered.
'Though it did not look like it,' I thought to myself.
The suspect to the subject was Carter Thompson but because there were lack of evidence and no witnesses so he ended up only as a suspect.
'This case is still open,' I thought to myself when I did not find any signature proving that it was closed. I flipped some more to see when this incident was from and I was astounded when it happened slightly less than a decade ago. This was the longest case I had ever came across especially when it had so little information collected over the years.
I went over to another file and this time it was the victim that Daniel and I had saved from the kidnap incident. His name was Charles Newton and other than his age and the description of what happened there was nothing else about him.
The next file I went through came along Cabrera's. I was flipping through, hoping there was something new. The last time I saw only stated that he was involved with Thompson's illegal business. There were pictures of a younger him transporting weapons into a person's, I assume client's, vehicle.
However I was a bit sceptical as this was dated five years ago. At that time, he was only around thirteen, so young, too young. I doubt there would be heavy charges on him as he might have been threatened by Thompson. But then, he would also be taken into custody for heavy questioning.
I was going through the papers recalling what I read before when the door to Daniel's room sprung open. I was still holding the papers when he saw me.
"Are you going through my stuff?" he said, sounding slightly angry as he walked over to me.
"Well, I wasn't going to sit down and stare at nothing," I shrugged.
He grabbed the file out of my hands roughly, "Don't you know that this is like invading my privacy?" he said raising his voice.
I was surprised by how he was reacting so I said, "Calm down. I know it's wrong to go through your stuff without your permission but it's not like you're hiding anything, right?"
He looked away clearly still angry with what I was caught doing. "Whatever," he said.
"What are you here for anyway?" he asked grimly. I gave him a tight lip because of his attitude but brushed it off. "I wanted to talk and ask about Cabrera."
His eyes perked, by the sound of his name and almost instantly, his mood did a one eighty. "What about him?"
"Well, we bumped into him remember? That day at the cafeteria?"
He furrowed his eyebrows as if trying to recall the distant memory, "Yeah?"
"You were practically stabbing him to death with your eyes that day. And when I asked about him you were so hostile about it. Also, I remember clear as day when you said he was an old friend," I explained.
He blew out a breath, "He is an old friend. We fell out a couple of years back, I didn't know he was into some illegal stuff. It was pure coincidence."
"How exactly did you find out about him?" I asked.
"Why are you asking weird questions, Charlotte? I have my ways as you have yours. But since I'm quite a transparent person, I'll tell you. I hear from people around. Open up their files and scrape some info out and piece things together. Trust me, I couldn't believe it when I was coming across his file either" he said. I nodded at his explanation, understanding every single bit of detail he gave.
"So, what am I to do now? He's a friend of Lara and I don't know if she knows about him."
"He knows Lara?" he asked surprised and I nodded.
There was a pause between us and then Daniel whispered, "Do you think he's after her? I mean, I haven't got any updates about him with Thompson. He might want something to do with Lorraine."
I gave him a confused look, "What does Cabrera have with Lorraine? She's Thompson's ex-wife, isn't she?"
"Yeah, like you said ex-wife. She got divorced with him for a reason that I'm not too sure about. But I know she definitely have something on Thompson and he obviously wants to make sure she keeps her mouth shut about it."
