I pulled back before his lips touched mine.
I wanted to believe none of this had happened, that it was all a dream, but when I was met with the tired, disappointed eyes of the potions master I knew that this was real. My heart fell just but looking at him. I couldn't do this, I couldn't kiss Snape, but by the looks of it he did not feel the same way. I thought maybe Snape would cover his feelings in rage or pretend like nothing had happened but his eyes said it all, he wanted this but when he saw that I didn't he himself wasn't even sure of how he would act.
It was almost like he had frozen for a second, unsure of how to react. I too sat unmoving terrified of what he would do.
Slowly he floated back to his normal wooden position on the chair and his expression was once again indifferent.
"I'm sorry." I sighed, I still felt sick but now the guilt made me feel empty too.
"No." He said, his detached voice free of emotion. "No, I should be the one apologising I shouldn't have done that. It was inappropriate, I know. I'm sorry."
"Please, don't be. I feel awful it's just-"
"You don't have to explain yourself, I understand, I don't know why I thought you would be interested. I should have took the hint. You said it yourself, you didn't mean anything you did.I mean why would you, look at me." He sneered.
"No." I exclaimed. "Honestly it has nothing to do with that, believe me."
"It's ok, I understand. I was being foolish."
I sighed and put my head in my hands. "I honestly didn't want to offend you, if you'd just let me explain."
"Just drop it. It doesn't need explaining. From now on nothing happened, understand? I wont be offended and you wont be embarrassed because nothing happened, ok?" He forced.
I nodded not wanting to argue but desperately wanting to explain myself. After a few long moments of awkward silence and a whole lot of pacing on Snape's behalf, he finally turned to me again.
"I meant to ask." He said, his voice reverting to the calm state it had previously been. "What happened to your cheek, the gash down it is unusually large."
Instantly my hand shot up to my face, feeling the rough wound. I had completely forgotten about it.
"Oh." I said. "Hagrid took us into the forest to hunt bowtruckels, I found one and not realising how hostile they were, picked it up. The rest is kind of self explanatory."
In and instant Snape's face changed from distant to furious.
"He did what? That great lout, does he not realise how dangerous these things can be, honestly its a wonder he's allowed to teach."
"You sound just like Malfoy." I snapped, unhappy with his disrespect towards the grounds keeper. "And anyway it was my fault for not being careful enough." I shouted.
"He is the teacher, he was supposed to be watching out for you." He argued back. "I'm going to have a word with your grandfather."
"No!" I shouted, grabbing onto the sleeve of the professors robes. "Please don't." I begged. "I don't want to get Hagrid into trouble, I'm begging you." I stood close to Snape, still hanging onto his cloak making sure he didn't take off. My wide eyes softened as I looked up at him and pleaded.
Snape sighed, squeezed his eyes shut and nodded reluctantly.
"I won't." He agreed. "But if anything else happens there has to be no objects." He warned, stiffening up again as he had subconsciously lost his strict composure.
"It's nice to see that you care." I smiled uncontrollably as I laughed slightly as his strange and sudden change in personalities. It was funny to see him be so remote after being weirdly affectionate.
This time I couldn't help myself. I stood so close to him now that there was no space for moving. I nibbled nervously on my lip as I retained eye contact and riskily slid my fingers through his, taking his hand.
Snape closed his eyes denying himself any emotions but pulled me close to him and began stroking my thick black hair.
I felt comfortable with him now.
I breathed in his warm musk and grabbed onto the fabric of his cloak near his waist.
This is where I felt I belonged. Finally I felt safe.
I was here with Snape as he held me. That's all I wanted right now; nothing more, nothing less. I felt I could stay standing like this forever. My reverie was soon broken when a loud bang echoed from the corridor outside.
The two of us took a sharp intake of breath, annoyed that our paradise had been disrupted.
"I'll be back." Snape promised as he planted a soft kiss on the top of my head and left me standing in his classroom.
