I'm a faerie. There's a 95% chance I'm a faerie.
Digesting this news, Laila sat back in her chair.
Breathe. - she thought.
She looked around the room. All sound gone from her head.
She looked around, imagining what it would be like to hang around her father's office once upon a time. But of course she didn't have a father. Let alone a family.
Her eyes stopped on Darien, who was looking at his father.
She noticed the way he slouched in his seat and acted as though he didn't have a care in the world.
His ocean blue eyes softened his sharp features. The soft curve of his mouth inched slightly to one side when he smiled.
"Laila?"
Her focuse snapped back into the world and she realized everyone was staring at her.
"What?" she blurted.
King Aelfric chuckled. "I was askking if you know if any of your parents are faeries."
"Actually, they're dead. I live in a foster home." she looked down at her lap.
"Ah. I see." the King looked at her with pity. "My condolensces."
The office went silent.
"Well, since WE aren't dead shall we eat so that we may live?" Darien said as he stood up.
"Come Laila. I shall escort you to the Dining Room." he put out his arm to her. She took it.
They walked out of the office. As soon as they were around the corner, they bumped into Nixie along with two other girls. One was tall with blue eyes and long blong hair. She wore a purple dress covered in butterfly wings. The other was much smaller with dark brown eyes and also with long hair, but hers was black. She was dressed in a green dress that sparkled in the light.
They were both beaming whereas Nixie was scowling.
"Oh my goodness! You must be Laila!" the two strangers squealed.
"I'm Lena, a sky faerie." the blond one said, hugging Laila tightly.
"And I'm Tilli." the other said. "Rainbow faerie. I dont like hugs."
Laila nodded understandingl
"And we're late." Darien pulled Laila away.
"It was nice meeting you!" she yelled over her shoulder.
"You too!" Lena and Tilli said as they waved.
Darien and Laila walked for a while in silence until Darien broke the silence by whispering in her ear, "I saw you staring at me."
Laila looked up at him. "When?"
"Back in the office." He smiled down at her.
Laila blushed.
"I wasn't staring." she lied.
"Yes you were, I could see the drool slipping out onto your lips." he said.
Subconciously, Laila reached up to wipe imaginary saliva off her lip.
Darien followed her hand up to her mouth and back to her side.
Laila blushed even more.
"Wait. If I was 'staring' at you and you noticed long enough to know I was staring, that means that you were also staring." she pointed out.
"So you admit to staring at me?" He smiles.
"Well, I, uh, no, I was- umm," she stuttered. "I was simply gazing at something that pleased me."
I can't believe I just said that. -she thought, ashamed.
Darien just smiiled and looked ahead. They came to a door and he bent down to her ear and whispered, "So was I." Then he walked through the door, leaving Laila standing awkwardly outside in shock.
She snapped out of her reverie and stepped trough the dorrway.
She entered in what she guessed as the Dining Room.
I was a big room with a tall ceiling. In the center of the room a big oak table stretched from one end of the room to the other. Chairs lined the sides of the table and two throne like seats stood at the head of the table. Cutlery, plates and glasses were placed and bouquets of flowers decorated the table.
Darien was already seated. He looked up at her, as if noticing her for the first time. He stood up, pulled out the chair next to him and gestured for her to sit.
She smiled politely whereas her insides where doing happy flips in her stomach.
She watched him as she sat and he watched her. She had the sudden urge to kiss him.
She kicked herself mentally for even thinking about it.
"Oh, how sweet. Chivalry insn't dead after all." Nixie walked in.
Laila was starting to really not like Darien's sister.
"Well Nyx, now that Laila's here, I finally realized that being a gentleman is worth it." Laila blushed. "Also, I realized how unladylike you are." Darien smiled tauntingly.
Nixie threw vase of flowers at him, which he caught.
"Now children, is that how you act in front of a guest?" a new figure emerged from the doorway.
She was a tall lady with wavy red curls that flowed perfectly down her back. She wore a green velvet gown and had blue eyes like Darien. Her soft features amd small delicate hands were identical to Nixie's. She had a crystal crown perched on her head. It shun in the lightand prjected rainbows on her face.
"My name is Queen Rhyannon. I welcome you to Borroway Castle and hope you make yourself at home." she sat in one of the head chairs.
Nixie snorted, "She already has." She placed her hands over her heart and batted her eyelashes. "In Darien's heart." she smiled evily.
Darien glared at her.
"Now now Nixie." Queen Rhyannon shook her head. "I noticed you had another jewel pierced into your wing?"
Nixie's smile wiped off her face. "Mom, I-"
"Ah, sorry I kept you waiting." King Aelfric ran in and plopped down in the second throne.
"Shall we?" Queen Rhyannon gestured towards the now full plates of food.
Finally, Laila was starving.
She dug into her meal.
