The next day I found myself caring more about how I looked. Call me crazy, but my appearance never really bothered me, except somehow, today it did.
First, I looked for something to wear. On most days, I just pick whatever ugly, old, raggedy shirt I find first. Surprisingly though, today I found a cute long sleeve, floral dress; so I put it on.
Then I grabbed a brush, and combed out my wavy brown hair, smoothing out all the tangles. If I'm honest, I don't really know what the point of brushing your hair is. I mean, yeah sure, your hair become silky smooth, but can we talk about how big it gets? It's like it triples in size.
My only good quality was that my eyelashes were naturally curly and dark, so I didn't apply any make up.
Besides, it's not like I could fix my face.
Giving my mom a quick wave of goodbye, I made my way to our school: Chandler Hill High School. It was probably the worst place in the entire world; but I guess Reed made it ok.
As I got out of my Toyota, I saw him standing right outside my door. A grin spread across his face as he took in my appearance.
"Wow."
I smiled nervously. "What?"
Reed stared at me for what seemed like forever, and then realized what he was doing, quickly looking away.
"You look pretty."
Blood rushed to my face, and I knew I was blushing. "No, I don't. But thanks anyways."
We walked into the school, and everything was going great until I spotted one of the jocks:
Preston. To sum things up, he was the cockiest, most aggressive waste of space I knew.
"Hey, Cally. You know, most days when I look in the mirror I feel sorry for myself, but when I look at you I just feel lucky."
Preston friends laughed as my face reddened with rage.
Reed pushed the jock into one of the lockers and grabbed the collar of his shirt. "Listen shithead—"
I placed a hand on Reed's chest, gesturing him to let Preston go.
I gathered some confidence and took a deep breath."Preston,"I said, " if you've got a problem with me, you can write it on a piece of paper, fold it, and shove it up your ass."
I walked away as I heard the people behind me laughing, and before I made way to the East Wing, I faintly heard Preston shouting. "Look at you two, working together like a fucking couple!"
I couldn't help but smile at the thought.
