When he did, I went and sat on the floor by the living room table near the couch with Zayn perching on the other edge. I put the book down, turned it around, and pushed it towards Zayn. He opened it and started translating.

“Once upon a time in a land far far away…” he chuckled. “Okay, sorry, for real this time.”

His eyes scanned the page from right to left, and his lips parted. I waited eagerly in tremendous anticipation, preparing my brain to sponge up every single word, every piece of the knowledge of old, at the same time moulding my next move. Because one word I misheard could lead to an atrocious failure, and one wrong step I take could definitely lead me to my own demise.

And it ain’t gonna be pretty.

Chapter 16 - Of Ink and Inklings

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32

“In the era when the Asellans reigned, it was a time of peace.” Tiny gasps escaped out lips as panoramas of beautiful landscapes and a magnificent castle shot out of the book and surrounded us, making us feel as if we were actually there, sitting in one of the many fields; we weren’t in the living room anymore. “They had control over everything: magic, land, kingdoms, and most importantly the people that live in the kingdoms. Legend tells of mystical crystals,” the panorama faded into a hologram of crystals, turning around its pivot, “that were used to sustain and ensure the Asellans’ power over the kingdoms. Peace ruled evenly for nearly seven millenniums, and all needs were fulfilled. There were no starvation, no despair, and no war, for seven thousand years.”

“That was until what is known as the Renegade appeared.” The holographic crystals faded into a burning city, with people riding atop of flying creatures attacking the castle from all sides or attacking one another in horseback in a dying bloody battlefield. “Kingdoms and realms warred out of greed and power against each other, although the spark really came out of the desire to overthrow the Asellans and to take away the crystals, as the Renegades, the rebels, did not want to be under their control.”

“The war went on for centuries. Countless lives were lost. Great leaders and rulers fell. At the end of the second century of war, the Renegades seized the Asellans’ palace in Athro, the capital of the 15th realm.” We were inside a castle. “The Renegades took hold of the crystals but no certain clan was destined to take hold of all four crystals.”

Wait, four? “Head said there were only three.” I said.

“I have no idea. Let me continue.” I nodded and he flipped the page then proceeded.

“The crystals were said to have their own magic, their own life force, and they did not mean for any more war.” The panorama changed into a dungeon-ish room, with people in their black knight armour crowding around the crystals we saw moments before. “So the crystals shone as bright as a young star and killed every one of the Renegades, and destroyed all of Athro, and all of the 15th realm.” A massive explosion of light and a black hole was seen.

No wonder everyone refused to believe that this whole crystal business wasn’t just mere legend. The realm the crystals came from didn’t even exist…at least it didn’t exist now. It was like something out of a children’s bedtime story book.
