“In time, you will understand.”
Isla stopped dumbfounded, as if those words struck her, reminding her of something.
“Get Crystals and you will see mother.”
“Dude, what do the Crystals have to do with my mom?”
“Until we meet in future, Icalena.”
The lady retreated into the shadows, out the door, and disappeared outside the hut like a flicker of a shadow you thought you saw in the dark. She was accustomed to running and hiding, I assumed. She was nowhere to be seen before anyone could react.
I focused my attention on Isla, waiting for her response.
She looked at the door, exasperated. Finally, she sighed:
“Why, Mom, why?”
Chapter 31 - Broken Walls
"Losing self-control leaves you as helpless as a city without a wall." - Proverbs 25:28
[Harry’s POV]
I had the overwhelming urge to hug Isla and just tell her everything would be alright. I just wanted her to cry into my shoulder and hug me back, thanking me for being there for her. I wanted to be her solace, the person she goes to when she needs someone. I wanted to embrace her. But she wasn’t the huggy type, so I discarded the idea. She would push me away if I hugged her now. Plus, she was tough as steel on her own.
I held my ground – yearning to comfort her, even if she might not need it.
“Dude, Har.”
I snapped out of my trance with the snap of fingers, “Hmm? What?” Isla was the one calling.
“I gotta talk to you. Alone.”
She took me by the arm and dragged me out of the shack as I tailed her thoughtlessly.
The spot near my elbow tingled where she held it. She was holding me. Isla was holding me!
I suppressed the primal impulse to stick my tongue out at Niall. Take that, mate. I smirked inwardly.
The open night air was breezy with something that made it slightly suffocating. My eyes blinked as I adjusted to the smokiness, the smell of burn. I looked afar to see the dimmed red glow of a burning city, a huge cloud of smoke hovering above what once was a grandeur. A wave of remorse blew through me; hundreds had died. It was a tragedy and my chest ached with the realisation. I didn’t understand how anyone in their right mind could slaughter an entire village of innocent people. It was mental; I couldn’t get my head around it.
“Harry,” I looked into her now dirty blue eyes. They shared quite a lot of resemblance with the lady’s eyes, the same emotions conveyed, a similar shade of color.
Two almost full moons were up in the sky. In other less pressing situations, this might actually be considered romantic. Two people under the moonlight-
“…are you even listening to me? You’re zoning out.”
I blinked my thoughts away. “Sorry, what was that?”
