I woke to an eerie silence that had settled over the girls dormitory. The reason for this was that there was absolutely no one in there except for me, and it appeared I was somewhere in-between a little and very very late.
I scrambled out of bed, began pulling on my uniform, and was down in the common room a few minutes later. Granted my tie was not tied, but I always seemed to have someone else do it for me. It was hardly my fault I had woken up so late.
I hurried through the empty halls, trying to tame my wild hair and look somewhat presentable for the first day of school. I had almost reached the great hall when I nearly ran headlong into Albus, who was skulking just outside the hall.
"Rose! There you are, I was waiting for you."
"Really?" I said as I tugged on my tie, trying and failing to turn it into a neat knot. "Why?"
"I didn't want to go in alone!"
I rolled my eyes. "Oh Al, don't be so melodramatic." I decided it might be easier to take the tie off, and began attempting to tug it off my head.
"I'm not being melodramatic! I'm just...well...will you please let me help you with that."
I paused in my tugging and allowed Albus to yank the tie back down to my neck and untangle the ends before finishing the knot neatly.
"Thanks, now we can embark on the terrifying journey of eating breakfast." I grinned at Albus wickedly. He rolled his eyes but followed me into the hall.
We sat down next to my dear idiot of a brother, who was trying to eat four apple tarts at once, and Lily, who was reading this mornings paper.
"Anything interesting?" I asked, grabbing every dish in reach and helping myself to each one in turn.
"No," Lily sighed, "just some rubbish about Kingsley resigning again, the idiots." She folded up the paper and pulled a tray of potatoes towards her plate.
"Hey you trying out for Seeker again this year?" I said through a mouthful of potatoes.
"Yeah we're gonna need you Lils, Malfoy has promised to kick our arses if it's the last thing he does." Al chimed in.
"Course I am, tryouts Saturday right?"
Al and I nodded at the same moment McGonagall, as tall and stately as ever, stood from her chair and snapped her fingers three times. The sound rang throughout the hall and everyone when quiet. "Students and staff! I would like to remind you that our first Quidditch match will take place on October the third. Captains, please begin to assemble and train your team for the coming season, and let's not have any more sticking charms on anyone's broomstick." She looked out at all of us severely, and everyone tittered. We never did find out who put that charm on Malfoy's broom. I smirked.
My first class of the day was Potions. The dark, cool air of the dungeons smelled faintly of mildew, but Slughorn's classroom was warm and surprisingly cozy. We all settled into our seats, looking around expectantly. Slughorn entered the room, pudgy and bald, with great, bushy eyebrows and a lined face. He sat in his chair with a great sigh.
"Well, N.E.W.T. students, good, good. Now we might as well get started, I will pair you off, and you can begin completing the instructions shown here." He gestured to the chalkboard at the front of the classroom. "Now, Potter, with Macmillan, Sloper with Goyle..." Slughorn continued to call out names until the only two people left were me, and Scorpius Malfoy, I blanched when I realized what was happening. "...and Weasley with Malfoy, alright get going everybody!"
Scorpius glanced around, and I looked away before we could share any kind of eye contact. I continued to ignore him, even when he walked over and slouched into the seat beside mine. Albus turned around and gave me a sympathetic expression, I sighed and opened my book.
The first thing everyone knows about Scorpius Malfoy, is that he is Slytherin's golden boy. Captain of the Quidditch team, Prefect, and top of his class, but James said he was a prat. James was right, the second thing everyone knew about Scorpius Malfoy was that he was the schools resident player. He burned through girls faster than Hugo could eat half a box of chocolate cauldrons.
Other than that, I didn't know anything about Scorpius, and I didn't want to find out.
"Weasley, do you have valerian roots? It says we need three."
I glanced over at the cauldron, which was already beginning to simmer, then pulled the remaining ingredients out of my bag, setting them on the desk. I pushed the roots towards Scorpius.
"Cut." I said simply. He began to chop quietly, and I began attempting to cut my sopophorous bean. It proved very difficult, as soon as I touched it with my knife, the bean would jump and quiver, I frowned.
"You have to crush it with the knife." I turned, Scorpius was looking at my progress, frowning.
After a last failed attempt at cutting, I turned the knife on it's side and pressed down, a gush of juice was released, and I gave Scorpius a tiny nod of thanks before scraping it into the cauldron.
The rest of the lesson passed in complete silence, and in the end, mine and Scorpius's potion was the only one to receive a compliment from Slughorn,
"Absolutely perfect." he said jovially.

That evening, Albus and I hurried down to the great hall for dinner and found seats in between Lily and James.
"I'm sorry you landed with Malfoy." Albus said as we sat down amongst the jabbering crowd.
"You mean Scorpius Malfoy?" Lily looked at me questioningly.
"Yeah, why?"
"Well," and to my great surprise Lily let out a little giggle, "he's very handsome isn't he?"
My face flushed.
"Yes, I suppose he is." Albus said musingly.
Lily rolled her eyes, "Al, Scorpius Malfoy is the farthest thing from gay you could possibly get."
"Yes well, that doesn't mean I can't admire him." Albus said, going back to his chicken.
"You guys talking about Scorpius Malfoy?" James jumped into the conversation, "The smarmy git, what do mean Rose 'landed with him' Al?"
"He means me and Malfoy are potions partners." I answered.
"Aww well, good luck with that, if you ask me Malfoy's just a dirty little cheater. You know he was going out with both Amanda Banks and Steffani Goodwin for a month..." James then embarked on what seemed to be a never ending rant concerning Malfoy and every suspicious thing he had ever been rumored to do.
I wasn't listening, I was thinking about Malfoy. I'm still not sure why, but I didn't mind being partners with him, I didn't mind at all.
