We were already over a month into the year, and our first Quidditch game had only just been scheduled for the coming Saturday morning.
"And Hugo, please remember that move I showed you last week, it would be really helpful tomorrow." Albus pleaded with Hugo, as James and Lily led the way down to the great hall for dinner.
"Don't be stupid Al, Hufflepuff's a pushover, we'll flatten them."
We had barely stepped inside the great hall when James nudged me and Albus, pointing.
"Check it out, it's little Scorpy." James got a mischievous look on his face, "Watch this you guys." Then he shouted over to Scorpius.
"Hey! Malfoy!" Scorpius glanced over, "Where'd you get your hair done, huh? Your mum's salon?" James and Hugo guffawed, while Lily and Albus rolled their eyes. I looked at the ground, avoiding Scorpius's gaze, and hoping James would stop there, but my hopes were futile. And people were starting to look around at us.
"Yeah, go every week with your mummy? You must be really close."
It happened so fast, I didn't know what was going on until James and Scorpius were rolling on the floor, both attempting to punch every inch of each other within reach. Now people were really paying attention, they gathered around the two boys, cheering for each of them in turn. I stood, shocked, staring at fight. Then James got a blow to Scorpius's lip, causing it to drip with blood.
"Hey! Get off him!" I yelled, launching myself onto the floor, and pulling James away from Scorpius, who was kneeling, breathing hard, blood still dribbling down his chin.
"Gerroff me Rose," James said, struggling against my grip, "I'm gonna kill him."
"You will do nothing of the sort!" Professor Mcgonagall was sweeping towards the scene, a look of fury on her face.
"I am disgusted with this behavior, come with me, both of you! Weasley, if you could kindly let go of Potter."
I had not even noticed I was still holding tightly to James. I released him grudgingly. "Sorry Professor."
James scrambled to his feet, and him and Scorpius followed Mcgonagall out of the room. I stood slowly, and Albus pulled me to the Gryffindor table as students began to break off from the scene, whispering.
"James is going to get in so much trouble." Lily said, shaking her head exasperatedly, "Honestly. Fighting with Malfoy? It's not even worth it."
"The bastard deserves it, him and his Death Eater parents both."
I looked up, suddenly angry. "He's not all that bad you know, just because his parents are stuck up doesn't mean he is, he's never done anything to you! So why do you find it necessary to persecute him very chance you get?" Hugo, Lily and Albus were all silent, staring at me in surprise.
"See you guys later." I grumbled, standing and walking out of the hall as quickly as possible without running.
I burst out of the double doors into the cool night, slumping onto the steps. Where did that come from? Why was I angry about those stupid insults? My cousins had always harped on Scorpius Malfoy, I hadn't exactly joined in, but I hadn't minded listening. Until now.
