Ok you guys, this is when the real drama starts. I have been waiting to get to this part for awhile now and let me tell you I am excited. I hope you are too! Enjoy!***
James is giving me the evil eye over his mashed potatoes. It has been about eight hours since he walked in on me and Scorpius, and he hasn't stopped glaring at me. I get up and go over to him, he immediately turns the other way."James." I said, exasperated. James looks at Lily sitting across the table.
"Lily, would please inform Rose here that I don't interact with crazy people?"
"Er, Rose, James wants to tell you-"
"I heard, thanks." I say, holding up a hand. Lily goes back to her sausages diligently.
"Look James, you can't ignore me forever."
"I would like to contradict that statement." He says stubbornly. I roll my eyes.
"Fine, whatever. Pretend I don't exist for the rest of your life, just don't be an arse about it." I get up and start back to my seat.
"Wait, Rose." He looks at me, and I can see the seriousness in his face. "Do you really, really, like him?"
"Yes." He stares at me for a second.
"You're mad." He says. I huff and walk away, plopping back at my seat.
"What's up?" Albus says, noticing my annoyed expression.
"James is being an arse."
"Huh, what else is new?"
"He refuses to accept the fact that me and Scorpius are going out. He seems to think being a Malfoy atomically makes him a bad guy."
Albus looks at me with a weird expression, "Well Rose, and don't get me wrong, I don't think him being a Malfoy has anything to do with this but... He is a bit of a player, I mean, how many girlfriends has he had since fourth year? 47?"
"Don't be ridiculous, there aren't enough girls in Hogwarts for him to have had gone out with 47 of them."
"I dunno, with that face and body combined...."
"You are as bad as Lily!" Albus doesn't respond, as at that moment, Alex sits next to him. "What do you think Alex?" I question, turning to him. "You're gay too, you should know this stuff."
I knew the instant I said this, that it had been an incredibly stupid thing to say. Albus looks at me with horror, and for a moment an unidentifiable expression flashes across Alex face, fear? But then he simply looks perplexed.
"I'm not gay." He says. Those words were certainly enough to made my jaw drop in shock, but the expression on Albus's face is ten times worse. For a moment we all sit in silence. I am the first one to recover.
"Oh, right, sorry. I shouldn't have assumed..... Anyway, Quidditch game this Sunday, should be fun huh?" I say, making a wild attempt to change the subject. But I'm watching Albus, who is focused determinedly on his dinner, but has set down his fork. Alex begins to serve himself food, and the three of us again sit in awkward silence.
Then Albus gets up suddenly, saying, "Well I'm tired, goodnight." For a moment we both watch him walk away, then I hurry after him.
I catch him in the hall, halfway up the marble staircase, his head rested on his knees. "Oh Al." I say softly, I sit beside him, wrapping my arms around his form. I can feel his body shake slightly as I hold him.
"He held my hand yesterday." Albus says in a small voice. "We were walking back from Herbology and he just, grabbed it, and now.... I don't understand."
"I'm so sorry Al." We sit there for several more minutes, until Albus raises his head.
"I think I'll go to bed now." He says, getting up.
"Are you going to be ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Night Rose." But doesn't look at me as he climbs the stairs.
I decide not to go back to the great hall, I don't think I would be able to restrain myself from punching Alex in the face. Instead I wander the down towards the library, but before I have gone three corridors, I hear voices. I would have continued on, but it's what the people say that stop me.
"The next target is almost in place, we need to prepare." I press myself against the wall, trying not to be seen. The next target?
"But what about Malfoy? We need to do something about that git." a different voice, slightly higher pitched, but both are male.
There is silence for a moment, then the other voice speaks. "We need to focus on the Jones." Jones, a last name maybe? "She will be angry if we stall any longer. But don't worry, I have a plan for Malfoy."
The voices begin to fade, they must be heading down the corridor. I almost step around the corner to confront them, but hold myself back. If they know I've been listening, they'll probably kill me on the spot. The thought sends chills up my arms, and I stand completely still, pressed against the wall. Who are these people? Who is 'Jones'? And how was Scorpius involved with them?
When the voices are gone completely, I am able to relax. I stand for a moment, unsure of what to do, then I hurry off back the way I came. I need to find Scorpius.
My search for him takes well over twenty minutes. I look in the great hall, the entrance hall, and am contemplating making a risky journey to the Slytherin common room, when I find him in the library. Huddled behind a large stack of books.
"What are you doing?" I say, peeking over the books to get a look at what he's working on. He looks up, surprised, then smiles.
"Hi Rose." He gets up and slides his hands around my waist, picking me up a few inches off the ground and kissing me gently.
"Hello." I say softly, and am about to kiss him again when I hear the snap of a ruler hitting a desk. Scorpius and I glance over to see Madame Pince, looking at us beadily over her spectacles.
"I will not have any funny business in my library. So I advise you to keep your hands to yourself if you want to continue your work." We break apart, both blushing slightly, and sit at the desk as she walks away.
"Oops." Scorpius says, grinning. He leans in for another kiss, but I put my hand over his mouth.
"Stop it!" I laugh. "I don't want to get kicked out for the rest of the semester."
"Ah I forgot." He says through my fingers. "This is your sanctuary." He gestures around the library.
"Yes, my domain. I am Queen here."
"Well, my sincerest apologies, your highness." He tries to bow while still sitting, but ends up nearly falling over. I laugh at him and Madame Pince looks over at us. I grab a book and hide behind it. When Madame Pince has focused back on her own book, I remember why I had come looking for Scorpius in the first place.
"Hey, Scorp." He smiles at the nickname.
"Yeah?"
"Something really weird just happened. I was walking down here, when I heard these two people talking." I told him everything I had heard, and with each word his face grew more and more solem. "And they mentioned you." I finished. "You don't have any idea who they are, do you?"
For a long while Scorpius didn't answer, just stared at me with an unfocused expression. "Erm, Scorp?" I said, waving a hand in front of his face.
"I have to go." He said, standing up suddenly.
"What, but I-"
"I'm sorry Rose." And when he looked at me, he had an unidentifiable emotion on his face. "I have to go." And he walked out of the library without glancing back
What the hell was going on?
