Saturday morning dawned bright and early, and me and Albus decided to go down to the Quidditch pitch early to warm up.
"Alright that's it Rose, you fake throw that ball one more time I'm gonna knock you off your broom." I laughed, then glanced down when I heard a giggle from below.
"Oh hey Lily, hey Hugo, what are you guys doing here?"
"I'm here to try out of course." Hugo said, looking offended.
"Right, well, don't be too put out when you don't make it."
"You're so mean to me."
I ignored him, instead throwing the Quaffle at Albus, who barely managed to catch it with the tips of his fingers.
"Watch out you guys, here they come." Lily said, looking up at the castle. A wave of students was pouring onto the grounds. Gryffindor tryouts were always a popular event, half of the house tried out, and the other half came to watch.
"I never understood why so many people find this entertaining." Albus said, frowning.
"It's cause your captain dummy, Harry Potter's son, you're practically as famous a your dad."
"Yeah, well, that doesn't make it any less stressful."
Abus tried out the Seekers first, he divided the six hopefuls into pairs, then let the Snitch loose in a separate match for each. Hugo did beautifully, catching the Snitch in the first five minutes, and completely out flying his competitor.
Then were the Beaters, where many of the people who tried out were dreadful, and Maria Jorden nearly died as a second year viciously, (and accidentally) swung a bat at her head. Then it was Chasers, that's the position I had played for the last three years, and I had tried out for it before, but that didn't mean I was any less nervous. I suddenly seemed to take in the sheer size of the crowd.
But then I swung my leg over my broom, gripped the worn wooden handle, and kicked off. The familiar feeling of weightlessness and freedom calmed my nerves, until they were nothing more than a distant hum in the background.
I grabbed the Quaffle, and turned toward the other side of the pitch, where I could see Albus, hovering in front of the goal hoops. I leaned forward and my broom shot into the sky.
Ok, I thought, I do best on my right, that's what he'll be expecting, so, the unexpected it is.
I streaked down the pitch, this move had to be fast for it to work. When I was ten feet from Albus, I stopped, swerving off to the right, then somersaulting over again and shooting at the left hoop.
It worked. Albus dove off to the right and the ball sailed through the left hoop. I raised my arms in celebration, and Albus gave an appreciative nod.
I scored my next four penalties with ease. Then flew over to the stands as the next person started their tryout. I scanned the crowd, which had grown since tryouts had first started. I was searching for Lily and Hugo, but my eyes landed on another person, and his eyes landed on me.
I hesitated, then flew over to him. "Wasn't expecting to see you here, Malfoy."
"I thought I'd come to check out the competition."
"Well what do you think?"
"Lousy." I folded my arms, indignent. "Kidding." he said.
"Yeah, you'd better be kidding." I said.
"Really?" He grinned. "And what would happen to me if I wasn't?"
"Let's just say a very public, and very humiliating defeat of your pride would be very entertaining for me."
"It would?" He laughed.
"Yeah, it would." I said, beginning to fly away. "I'll see you around Malfoy."
"Yeah, see ya." he called after me.
I waved, and he waved back.
"What was that about?" Lily asked when I sat down next to her a few minutes later.
"What?"
"That conversation you just had with Scorpius Malfoy, duh."
"That was barely even a conversation." I said evasively.
"Oh my god, don't even play that with me, why were you talking to him?"
"I was just saying hi to a friend."
"He's your friend now? When did that happen?"
"Just now, I think. I'm not positive, but I think it happened just now."
I ignored Lily's raised eyebrow and focused on the Quidditch pitch, but I could not stop a slight smile from creeping onto my face.
