Navajo Fry Bread
This is a traditional Native American bread. Usually when you encounter it, it is served with stews or the bread is used like the shell of a taco and it is topped with seasoned meat, beans, lettuce, cheese, onions, etc. I actually like it as a breakfast food, lightly drizzled with honey.
- Oil to cover at least I in of the pan
- 3 cups white flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm water.
Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and water until soft, but not sticky. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes.
Pull off egg sized rounds from dough and roll each approximately ¼ inch thick. Poke with a fork in a few places.
Fry in oil over medium to medium hot (but more toward medium) heat until you see bubble appear. Then flip and fry the other side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels, serve warm.
