ALLIE POV
The next morning, Allie woke from her slumber rejuvenated and ready to take on the day. The sun was shining through her window in smooth lines, tracing out the shape of the blinds to cast a dull glow throughout the room. The birds were already perched on the tall oak tree right outside her window and singing their sweet song. She laid there for a moment, taking in the peacefulness of her surroundings when she heard a banging on her door.
"ALLIE! WAKE UP! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!" Her roommate, Elizabeth, shouted from the other side of the thin wooden barrier.
Knowing Elizabeth, it was probably something stupid, like she could see our hot neighbor doing lawn work shirtless or her toast created the perfect design that resembled the Statue of Liberty (all of which has really happened, by the way). She couldn't wait to see what her wild roommate conjured up next.
Rolling out of bed and heading towards the kitchen, Allie heard the faint sound of the television playing what sounded like a toothpaste commercial. She walked straight to the refrigerator and grabbed the orange juice to pour herself a glass. Elizabeth was sitting at the kitchen table, eyes glued to her phone as she typed away, her ham and cheese omelet sadly being ignored to the right of her.
"You paged?" Allie leaned against the counter and sipped on her juice. Elizabeth looked more excited than usual when she turned around to face her.
"Ok, I'm going to give you a quick summary since the show is coming back on in probably less than 3 minutes," Elizabeth spoke very rushed, like her whole life depended on what she was about to say next. Allie watched her antics, amused.
"So, I'm watching a recording of Morning Show, right? It aired earlier this morning. And guess who's on it? Allie, just guess. Take a whack at it."
"Wow, that's tough," Allie pretended to think really hard, enjoying the fact she was putting her roommate through such torture. Elizabeth started bouncing her leg, "One Direction?"
"YES!" Elizabeth shrieked, "They're on the show talking about their new album and all that fun stuff when they announce...wait for it...they're going on tour again!"
Elizabeth started bouncing in her seat and fanning her face. She was acting like this announcement was the biggest thing since sliced bread. Not understanding her best friend's such obvious joy about the news, Allie proceeded to collect the ingredients she needed for a nice batch of waffles.
"Why is this such a big deal? You've seen them in concert before." Allie pointed out to Elizabeth, who was now tweeting frantically about who knows what. Elizabeth stood up from her seat and grabbed the now-cold omelet to discard it. She made her way to the sink.
"You are correct. But a One Direction concert isn't just a concert," she scrubbed her plate down in the sudsy water, "it's an experience. An experience like no other. And just the fact that they'll be coming back here to D.C. is an indescribable feeling. We'll be breathing the same air as them again!"
Allie looked up from her task, "We? We as in who and who?"
"You and me, of course!" Elizabeth placed the spotless plate back into the cabinet and ran back to her place at the table.
"But—"Allie was cut off by a loud SHHHH! followed by the boisterous introduction music to cue the viewers to start paying attention to the show again. Elizabeth turned the volume up.
"We are back with the biggest boy band in the world, One Direction," the news lady said in a thick English accent, "they just announced that they are going on tour again," Elizabeth screamed in excitement, "and there has been crazy-positive response to the announcement. Boys, what made you decide to go back on the road again?"
"Partly because of the new album," Liam spoke up first, "we really wanted a chance to share that album with our fans in a way that only a live show can do so we said 'why not?'"
Allie scooped her waffles out of the maker and sat next to her roommate whose eyes were glued to the television. It looked like she was in another world. A world that only consisted of her and One Direction. She heard an Irish accent coming from the show now:
"Connecting with our fans is probably the best part of the job and we want to do it as much as possible while we still can."
Allie could never remember that one's name. It started with an M or N but she never put in the effort to actually look it up. She ate her waffles in silence.
"But there has to be some other perks in this business, right?" The news lady asked. The boys looked at each other, silently signaling who would do the answering to this question. Harry took the lead.
"Of course there are always perks...to any job, really. And being able to actually see and interact with our fans is something we all enjoy. They become less of a face in a crowd and more of a person who's got a real story to them." He sounded like he had said this a million times before. The other boys agreed with his thoughtful answer.
Allie took a mental note to message her Harry later. She had ended her conversation with him so abruptly last night, she had never gotten a chance to ask him how his day was.
The show continued its One Direction segment for another five minutes of awkward dialogue before moving on to another topic.
"Wow, they have got it going on in all the right places." Elizabeth stated almost to herself, "Especially Niall. I would sit on his face in a heartbeat."
NIALL. That's his name.
"Liz, you need a filter." Allie laughed off her very uninhibited comment about the Irish singer.
"Come on, there has to be at least one of them you'd do the hanky panky with."
"Not really. They all seem pretty into themselves if you ask me," Allie stood up to clean her remaining dishes so she could leave this conversation as fast as possible. Arguing with Elizabeth about One Direction was like a death sentence.
"Did you not just hear what Harry had to say about his fans?! That was the sweetest thing I have ever heard!"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Allie made her way back to the safety of her bedroom, away from all this talk about an alternate universe to the comfort of talking to her Harry.
