The next day, I wake up and see that Emmett is still fast asleep. It's probably the most sleep he's gotten in days. I look at the clock and see that is 10 o-clock. Crap, Lexi's probably thinking I'm dead or something. I've never stayed the night at Emmett's before. I get out of bed, careful to make sure I don't wake Emmett up. I walk into the kitchen, where my cell phone is sitting on the table. I check it and see that I have five missed calls from Lexi. Shit. I call her and she picks up after one ring.
"Amy! Where the hell have you been?!" she yells, and I move the phone away from my ear so that it doesn't hurt it.
"Sorry!" I say, cringing from how angry she is. "I fell asleep at Emmett's and then I didn't want to move so I ended up staying here and forgot-"
"Wait." she interrupts me, not sounding as angry with me as before. "You stayed the night at Emmett's?" Oh no. She caught that, and she isn't gonna let it go anytime soon.
"I just fell asleep here! Nothing happened!"
"Sure." she says. "Whatever you say, Amy." I can tell that she doesn't believe me.
"Aren't you supposed to be in work?" I ask, wanting to change the subject.
"I called in sick." she says, and I gasp. "I was worried about you and I don't think I'd be any good to patients like that." Lexi never calls in sick because of how much she loves her job. She must have been really worried about me.
"Well I'm still over Emmett's, and I don't know when I'll be home." I tell her. "So I'm not dead or anything, don't worry." She laughs.
"Okay, I"m glad." She hangs up, and I jump when I hear a voice behind me.
"You stayed the night?" I spin around and see Brett. I've met Brett a few times because of how many times I've come over here.
"Yeah I was just tired and too lazy to go home." I explain, trying to subtly let him know that nothing other than sleeping happened.
"Is he still sleeping?" he asks, and I nod, smiling. He smiles as well. "He never sleeps this late. It's a good thing, too, he needs it." He walks over to a coffee maker sitting on the counter. "Coffee?" he asks me.
"Yes please." He brews me a cup and hands it to me. "Thanks."
"You're really good for him, you know." I look at him in surprise. "He seems a lot happier than before."
"I always thought you hated me." I admit. He looks at me in confusion. "I just kind of got it in my head that I'm not good enough for him and always thought that you did too for whatever reason. I know, it's kind of irrational." I laugh softly at how ridiculous it sounds. He laughs as well.
"Yeah that is kind of irrational." I hear a door open and turn around to see Emmett come out of his room. He looks more awake than I've seen him in a while. I smile.
"Good morning!" I say as I walk over and kiss him on the cheek. "Did you sleep well?"
"Better than I have in a while." he answers, looking down at me smiling. "Thank you." I nod. "What were you two talking about?" he asks.
"We were actually talking crap about you, right Brett?" I joke, grinning.
"Yup!" Brett says. Emmett rolls his eyes.
"Are you working today?"
"Nope." I answer. "I have the day off."
"Do you want to try to find Alex?" He sounds hesitant to ask, knowing that Alex isn't a subject I'm enthusiastic to talk about. I bite my lip, and Emmett sees my reluctance. "We don't have to if you don't want to yet." I shake my head.
"We have to at some point." I say. "It might as well be now. I can't just put it off." He nods. "How would we find him? He doesn't have his powers anymore so we can't find him like we did last time." I look at Brett, knowing he's good with this kind of thing.
"I've been on the lookout since he escaped from prison." Brett says. "I've hacked into security cameras around the city, but I haven't seen him anywhere." Then, I think of something.
"I have an idea." I say slowly. "But you're not gonna like it." Neither of them say anything, so I continue. "What if, instead of finding Alex, we let him find us?"
"What are you saying?" Emmett asks cautiously. I take a deep breath, preparing myself for his disapproval.
"I'm saying that we should use me as bait."
