"Hey. You know, I've been awake for a few days now. Maybe it's time you quit lying around on your ass and do something for a change." I said in my typical snappy yet sassy tone. And then reality caught up with me. Looking away for a second I sighed. I'd been sitting there for twenty minutes and that was the best I could come up with. "Come on Rose." I whispered looking at her just lying there. "I'm sorry. I wasn't fast enough and you should never have been in that fight. You weren't trained and I was irrational."
I carefully ran my fingers over her scraped knuckles which should have healed by now. That was part of the problem. She wasn't healing. It has been days and nothing. No progress, no reaction, nothing. Rose was stable, stably stuck in a coma.
My eyes began to burn with tears that I'd managed to push to back for long enough but they were relentless and instead of continuing to fight the river I let the banks break, but I wasn't done talking to Rose. "Wake up and yell at me yourself." Hot tears spilled down my face and dripped from my chin onto the ends of her long fiery red hair. "Just wake up. Wake up Rose."
I took my hand away and covered my face with both hands allowing myself to cry with all the emotion that I had held up inside of me. Sobs raked through my entire body. I felt myself shake for what felt like hours, and it may have been.
Werewolves shouldn't get like this. We should heal. We should get better. We shouldn't be in a coma. Rose shouldn't be in a coma.
The doctor said that he didn't have much experience with anything similar to Rose's case. The lack of healing was connected to the loss of Noel, the wolf she had mated. Despite Noel having never been Rose's true mate he was the wolf she chose to mate and the bond between them meant a lot to her wolf. Most of all Noel was an alpha and her wolf had grown accustomed to the power of Noels wolf, making her stronger. Now that Noel was gone so was his power, leaving Rose and her wolf weak. I hated the guy but I never wanted him dead, well not now anyway. Not now that I know what the loss of Noel has done to Rose.
I wiped my face with the bottom of my t shirt. If it were possible I'd finally stopped crying. Perhaps I had ran out of tears. I took a deep breathe which came out uneven as I exhaled.
"Oh, I'm sorry." I heard behind me. With a gasp I turned to see a man standing by the door not far from me. He was perhaps a few years older than me by the look of him. From where I was sitting I could feel power radiating off of him, but then why would he apologise?
The man was well built, probably spending most of his time in the gym training.
I answered quickly, getting to my feet and making my way closer to him and the door. "No. I was just leaving."
"I wasn't expecting Rose to have visitors. I'm her beta- well-" He awkwardly cut himself off. Now that I was closer to him I could see his deep blue eyes, the colour I imagine the ocean to be when there's no land, just pure water.
"Alpha now, huh?" I asked, doing the math. Solemnly he nodded.
That's what people mean when they call me insensitive. I phrased it wrong again. The guy had just lost his alpha, maybe even a friend, and there I am rubbing salt on that wound. Well done Alex, well done.
"Were you a friend?" The new alpha asked gesturing to Rose.
My attention turned back to the bed. There was a steady beeping sounding from the heart monitor. If it were even possible another wave of sadness hit making me feel worse. From here the only thing that convinced me Rose was still going was the sound of that god forsaken heart monitor. Such a bitter sweet sound that seemed to be endless.
I nodded my head. Personally I would consider Rose one of my few friends in the whole world. Never had making friends been important to me. These days I had Leon, Hunter, maybe even Cas and Leon, and Rose. That's better than my previous record of two.
