Chapter 18

I leaned against my headboard, staring blankly at the wall in front of me. I felt chills run up my spine, sending goosebumps all over my body. I felt numb to everything around me.
I picked up my phone to call Matt but something stopped me. I saw a text from an unknown number.
"hello y/n" it said.
"who is this?" I said.
"that's not important right now. all you need to know is that you need to complete the tasks that I give you within 4 days. if you don't, well I guess you'll just have to find out" it said.
I put my phone down and ran downstairs. I snuck out my back porch and crossed my neighbors yard to get to Matt's house.
I climbed up the tree next to his window and knocked quietly on the glass.
his head peeked up from his bed and looked towards me with a smile. he threw on a pair of sweatpants and then opened the window, letting me inside.
I hugged him tightly, pressing my face against his warm chest. I could feel his heart beat against my cheek.
"I have some news" I said, pulling away from the hug.
"okay, what's up?" he replied, motioning for me to sit down.
"I received a text before I went to bed from an unknown number. they said that I have to complete 3 tasks in 4 days or less or else they said they'll be consequences" I said, getting up and pacing back and forth.
"did they give the tasks yet?" Matt asked, putting his hands on my shoulders.
"no, they just said I had to complete 3 tasks. no info or nothing other than it has to be completed in 4 days or less and there will be consequences if I don't" I repeated.
"well it's obviously a vampire from one of our enemy clans" Matt said, sitting down at his computer.
he started to type stuff rapidly into the search bar.
"what are you doing?" I asked him.
"searching up the different local clans on a website that's based upon historical events and sitings in this area. I can narrow it down to which one it might be and we can stop them" he said.
"I'll be right back" I said.
I walked down the hall to Alex's room and shut the door behind me.
"hey gorgeous" Alex said, standing up from his bed.
"I don't have time for your shit. stop calling me gorgeous. I'm not yours and I don't want to be" I said.
"of course you want to be, that's why you make such a big deal out of me flirting with you" Alex smirked.
he walked closer to me and placed his lips on mine. I pushed him off of me and slammed him against the wall.
he got up from the floor right as Matt walked in.
"what's all the noise?" Matt said and then saw me standing in the corner.
"y/n? what are you doing in here?" Matt said, starting to raise his voice.
"well...I was coming in here to ask Alex any information about what's going on at the moment but of course Alex had to turn it into a little love affair" I said, walking over to Matt.
"you what?" Matt said, clenching his hands into fists.
"Matt calm down, I was just kidding around with her" Alex said.
Matt ran over to Alex and grabbed him by his shirt. he slammed him up against the wall and pressed his hands against Alex's neck.
"you fucking flirt with y/n again and you'll die" Matt said, letting go of Alex.
Alex fell to the floor and held his neck, coughing.
"cmon Matt, he's not gonna help us" I said, grabbing Matt's hand and pulling him out of the room.
Matt stopped and pressed me against the wall, placing his lips on my neck.
"Matt, we have to focus" I said, smiling.
"we will, after" he said, continuing to put his lips all over my neck, leaving small marks.
"I love you" he said.
"I love you too" I said.
"no I'm in love with you y/n, you don't even know how much in love with you I am. that's why I took that situation with Alex so seriously. you make me feel alive even though I'm dead" Matt said and then pressed his head into the crook of my neck.
I lifted Matt's head up and smashed my lips against his, pressing his body against the wall behind us.
"I'm so in love with you too Matt" I said.
Matt lifted me up bridal style and brought me back into his room. he gently placed me on his bed, leaning over me, kissing every inch of my neck.
"Matt stop" I said, pushing him off of me.
"what's wrong?" he asked, sitting down next to me.
"I don't want to do this anymore" I said, standing up.
"What do you mean?" he asked, grabbing my hand.
I pulled my hand away and a tear rolled down my cheek.
"I don't think this relationship is going to work out anymore" I said.
"What the fuck" he said.
"Matt it's best for us" I said and walked out on him.
he slammed open his door and followed me down the stairs, yelling nonsense at me.
"Matt please stop following me" I yelled.
I walked outside and got in my car, slamming my hands against the steering wheel. Matt stood in the doorway, watching me as I drove away.
I had to do this. it was the best thing for him to protect him.
I sped down the long road, contemplating what the fuck I just did. I just broke up with the love of my life. I had to do this. it was the first task.
