‘Get out of here Josh, I don’t want to see your face.’ I said in a lazy voice. Keep it steady Cassidy.

‘I’ve only come in here for a drink like everybody else.’ He said innocently.

‘Sorry, I’m going off my shift now.’ I said, my high-pitched tone making me sound braver then I actually was.

‘I can’t wait for the summer camping trip. It’s going to be very fun.’ He said with a smile that was lethal all around the edges. His eyes played with mine, mocking them even.

‘I’m not going.’ I said bluntly. I actually was, but I didn’t want to give away anything that would drive him. I was able to take a step forward and place and hand on the counter. With a slow and creeping intonation I asked

‘Can I get you anything?’ His eyes abruptly changed, shocked. He played along, sliding his upper body forward.

‘Yes you can. A coffee would be nice. No sugar please.’ He said his smirk back on.

‘Maybe I will put sugar in it. What would a couple spoons of sugar to do a diabetic person?’ I said, raising an eyebrow. He took a steady breath it.

‘You don’t have it in you to do that to me Cassidy.’ He said matter of fact. The door that was only slammed shut bolted itself now, locking every possible way that it could open.

‘You wanna bet?’ I said, rather childishly. He was weighing his options now; I could tell by the way he shifted in his seat and the way his head turned. He scratched the back of his neck, knowing that I was serious. ‘I’ve been pouring sugar into coffee for quiet sometime now. How will you tell if I’ve put something into it that you can’t have?’ I waited a moment, this time playing his eyes, ‘you think you’re a solid rock just like your brother but really you’re just the one kidding yourself.’ I said in a nasty way.

You got it Cassidy

With that, he swirled off his chair, broke eye contact and strolled out of the door not even taking the minuet to say something funny or arrogant. A moments beat past. The door in mind shattered open and the thoughts and possibilities ran riot through my head. I breathed a very audible sigh of relief, grasping the counter to steady myself. If only being that strong was easy. But for some strange reason I just knew that he’d be back with more games to play. Or too loose at.
