I examined myself in the mirror, looking at the faint mark just above my left eyebrow. I lifted a hand to gently stroke it, to see if it hurt. It didn’t. It looked acceptable now. Like I’d just scratched it on something. I turned to the side and opened the wardrobe and was met by mountains of hung shirts. Most of them were black, only a few light colours. It was easy to pick out some jeans. Some expensive looking dark ones that was baggy around the ankle and waist. But, what colour to wear? I called in Josh for some help.
‘Hey bro, which colour do you think I should wear tonight?’
‘Why, what’s tonight? You didn’t tell me you were going out with jade.’
‘I’m not. We’re all going to Kyle’s birthday party.’ I said with a clean smile picking out a dark blue T-shirt.
‘We weren’t invited Trent.’ Josh said lazily.
‘It doesn’t matter Josh,’ I said breathing outwards, ‘what matters is that I want to look good for all the people that are going to be there. The whole netball team is going to be there, and Crystal is too.’ I chucked the dark blue one back into the draw and this time pick out a long sleeve black shit. I turned around and laid the shirt onto the bed with the jeans under it.
‘This looks good!’ I said, picking them up. I pulled my top over my head and let it land over the floor along with my joggers. Pulling on the jeans, I zipped up then went over to Josh who was sitting at the table in the main room.
‘Oi, why you acting so weird? I asked, trying my best to be brotherly.
‘I don’t feel like going. They’ve probably spiked all the drinks with mountains of sugar.’ After a moments pause he said, ‘Jesus! Would you go put a top on or something! I don’t fancy seeing you naked! I’d like to see your girlfriend naked but not you!’ I chuckled and strolled back into the bedroom placing my arms into the sleeves them buttoning up, I left the top button open. I pulled back the cuffs and fastened them back just below the elbows.
‘Josh! Go get ready! Look, I’ll taste all the drinks before you have them okay! Trust me!’ He walked in surprisingly quick. His arms ran past me picking up the dark blue shirt that I’d chosen not to wear.
‘Since you’re dragging me to this…I get to keep this shirt.’
‘Are you negotiating with me?’ I asked, eyebrows raised in amusement.
‘Yes I am.’ He said waving the shirt in the air, ‘And I’m going to wear it tonight…with those jeans you got on.’ He smirked at me until I realised that he actually wanted my expensive baggy and best jeans.
‘No way! Now go get ready!’
‘Well it was worth the try.’ He said shrugging.
‘He is still the little kid I used to torment.’ I chuckled to myself. I walked up to my chest of draws and dug out my silver watch, wrapping it around my wrist I took another look in the mirror hoping that maybe the soft marks would fade just a little bit more. I then placed the thin silver chain around my neck fastening it and last but not least located the small round earring into the left earlobe. Josh appeared in the doorway again looking groomed up. His hair was spiked, his contacts were in and he was fully dressed.
‘Hey isn’t that…my gold watch and chain you got on?’ I asked eye brows crossed.
‘Another ‘negotiation’. He answered simply. I rolled my eyes as he said:
‘Jesus! Would you hurry up! You take ages to get ready! You take longer then Jade!’
‘You need to calm down Josh. Go watch some TV or something.’ I waved him off. ‘Oh and where’s the gel?’ I called before he could leave sight.
‘In the bathroom on the top of the draw.’ He gave, sitting back down in the main room again.’
I walked into there quickly slapping some gel into my hand. Carefully I rubbed it into my hair and then began to pick up bits of my hair and spiking it on its end and I pulled the little strokes so that they were leaning on one end. As I pulled out a little fringe I forced it to move upwards. For the next ten minuets, I perfected the spikes, making the ones on the top of my head slightly small then the ones at the back of my head. Once more I perfected my fringe pushing it slightly higher and let the end of it rest of the top of my forehead. I stood back looking at every detail of the hair. Frustrated, I flattened the fringe and decided to spike that out to one end instead like the rest. I took another step back, happy with the hair. I took out the aftershave, padding it on. Then sprayed a load of Diesel on making sure not to put on too much. Moisturising my hands and face I took another look in the mirror.
Damn, you look hot tonight Trent.
‘Your so goddamn, vain!’ Josh shouted from the main room. I laughed at his reactions but he was totally right. No one could resist me tonight. The person who would be easiest to seduce would be the one and only Crystal. She acted all tough around me, but I knew what she really wanted and I couldn’t wait.
‘If you don’t get your vain ass out here now, we are going to be late!’ He shouted getting angrier by the minuet.
‘Hold on!’ I called back. Was there something missing. Hair, check. Cloths check. Jewellery, check. After shave, check.
Nope. All good Trent. I quickly gripped my leather jacket and raced down the stairs to be met by Josh who was standing in the kitchen.
‘We have our kitchen downstairs! We are so weird! Now let’s go.’ With that we both made our way to my car and jumped in. The car started with a loud and aggressive sound. I pushed down the clutch and we were off to cause trouble in a tiny little flat. I made a smooth left down a few roads.
‘Trent, you forgot your contacts.’ His words skimmed my mind until it hit me. I ripped down the shade above my head and looked in its mirror.
‘Get your eyes on the road!’ Josh shouted, whom I was oblivious too.
‘No wonder I looked so different…’ I grinned looking at my own piercing eyes.
‘Your so vain! Stop looking in every mirror you find!’
Taking another left I said: ‘How come you put yours in?’
‘I’m used to them, and so is everyone else. And if you haven’t noticed I actually need them!’ He said, his tone of voice heavy with sarcasm.
‘I look better without mine,’ I said giving him a small wink. Judging by the banners plastered on the windows and the loud music radiating from the third floor, I guessed that we were late. Slowly, I parked up my car and climbed out, leaving my jacket inside. I dusted my black shirt and jeans before setting off.
‘ I wear that t-shirt better you know.’ I called to my brother. Josh swore at me cutting ahead to take the stairs. I strolled to the left and took the lift instead. Walking up all those stairs would crease the back of my jeans, I thought. We both arrived at the door at the same time. As I was about to push the door opened. Josh gripped my wrist.
‘I don’t want a repeat of what last time we went to a party.’
‘Relax. I promise I won’t let you have anything that has sugar in it. Don’t worry.’
‘I trust you.’ He said flatly. For a second I let my guard drop and the emotion inside me became visible. As quickly as it had shown, it was hidden again. Taking a deep breath I walked inside the room to be met by nothing but loud music and voices that were way to loud. I grinned and I was relieved so did Josh.
