A/N Sorry for the long wait, I've been busy with school and *nearly vomits* people. This chapter may be ....eh? But I'm trying to throw more beast shifters in it. Enjoy!
I opened my eyes to a bright sun shining through the leaves of the tree Fay and I slept under, the fire had been put out and everything packed up. "Fay, let's get up." She rubbed her eyes and sat up holding her rabbit tight. "Morning, where are we heading today?" I consulted the map I left out, I hate to say it, but the place we should go to is..."Drachen, maybe...no Drachen is the best option." Faylinn looked surprised and almost ready to scream at me. "Why would we go there?! There are people there that want to kill us!" She nearly yelled, "Kill me, you mean." I corrected "Not if they can't find me, I just need to disguise at least one feature of my face."
Fay used her fingers to brush through her blue hair and put a band in it. "Well...are you sure? They kinda hate you there, and your brand could be recognised pretty easily." I waved my hand at her dismissively "One thing at a time." I packed up the map and buckled my sword to my waist. "Believe me Faylinn, I don't want to go there any more than you do. But keep in mind that it was invaded by Wyngerians, making it safer than anywhere else." She folded her arms and started walking close behind me. "As long as it's somewhere we can settle down."
It's funny really, sometimes instead of brother and sister it's like we're father and daughter. She always seems to look up to me like that, but the thought makes me feel bad for her. She lost her parents and watched them die, how can someone like me make up for that? Faylinn spoke up all of a sudden "So, how can we recognize beast shifters?" I was a bit taken aback by the question, why would she want to know at a time like this. I looked down at her, her eyes were full of curiosity, "Normally, they can inherit traits of the beast they can take on, like my eye and scales. But sometimes it's the ears and tail of their inherited beast form." I looked at my brand suddenly, it seemed like it didn't want me to mention things like that.
"In rare cases, they can look completely like the animal in human form, like a werewolf except with it's mind intact." She suddenly piped up "So if there's a rabbit shifter it can inherit it's fur?" I smiled at how well she caught on. "Yes exactly." We walked for a bit more before we reached a road where she asked her next question "What does it feel like to take on the beast form?"
"It is recorded that it hurts the first few time because your body is not used to the sudden change, but there were enchanted stones that remove the pain." I looked behind us to see a carriage that was heading in our direction. Instantly after Fay decided to wave it down, "Mister?! Can you give us a ride to Drachen?!" she shouted to the carriage. We stopped as it sped up to catch up with us. "Thank you mister!" She pulls off the cute little girl act perfectly.
We climbed in carefully, greeting the woman inside. "It's not every day we get children to ask for rides." She was blond and skinny with her hair in that fancy hat on her head style (I don't know what it's called, you find it on most noble girls.) "So, why are you two heading to Drachen?" Faylinn answered before I could, "We're visiting some family. They invited us for their marriage anniversary." The blond girl brushed some hair out of her face and looked at me and I immediately pulled down my hood. "You're not very talkative are you?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"I see no point in joining the conversation you two are having."
She smiled at me, clearly not noticing the hint but thank Naga she changed the subject. "You have the robes of a royal tactician, whoever do you work for?" I had forgotten that my robes had decided to take on a more regal look for a second. "I work for my own person, I left that business years ago." I lied "I decided that my sister was more important."
She then turned to Faylinn and asked "Have you seen your brother working before?" As Faylinn opened her mouth, the carriage suddenly hit a stop and a male trying to calm the horses could be heard outside. "Stay here" I pulled my sword from it's scabbard and carefully stepped outside. I turned to the the driver's pale face, "What happened?" I asked slowly. He turned to me and said calmly "We have a pack of shifters on us." I could feel my face grow cold as I looked into the treeline to see a large black shape retreat a few feet. "Get the horses going as fast as we can." I walked to the window and told Faylinn what was wrong "Don't alert her, she'll just make bad choices at worse times." I handed her the rapier as she nodded.
On top of the carriage was quite roomy, even with the luggage up there. I took out my fire tome, put away my sword, and let my senses take control as we started moving. "Hey driver! Not too fast!" I could hear the girl yell inside the carriage. I turned my head to see enormous raven in a V shape flying at us. I summoned a ball of fire to my hand and let random incantation float around me to look intimidating. The ravens slowed a bit and spread out attempting to keep their distance. As long as we have the treeline, I should be able to fend them off. A sudden crash into the vehicle made me fall off the side, I grabbed the railing of the roof as fast as I could and could hear the girls scream as my legs dangled below me.
Wait for it, wait for it.... I saw a raven fly at me as I threw my legs up and landed on it's back. Without thinking, I threw my arms around the shifter's neck as he tried to throw me off "Oi kid! Buzz off, this personal!" He took into a sudden dive which flung me into the talons of another shifter. "Holy- hey guys! We need this kid, he's got rare blood!" I took the chance to lob a ball of flame into another raven's face. I smirked as he fell to the ground "The hell are you doin'? We're not your enemy!" He tossed me into a tree and I hit my head.
Everything was dancing around my vision, the carriage was leaving without me to protect i- Fay. I hopped out of the tree and fell to my knees. Think Reflet think! You can't make a portal, you'd rip yourself apart. Hijacking another bird is out of the question.
Another idea came to mind but I pushed it away, too dangerous. I started running as fast as I could, as if that would work. I held my tome out and focused, if I can just...a stream of white flame flew forward and struck carriage, not enough to damage, but enough to scare the horses. I saw the raven take their human-like forms and open the door. The one who tried to grab Fay backed away quickly clutching his face. That's my girl.
I caught up to the carriage and pulled out my sword, standing my ground in front of the carriage. "None of you will touch her." I growled. The largest of the shifters stepped forward with both hands in the air. "Listen White Blood-" Something in Faylinn snapped "Don't you call him that!" She ran forward and swung her sword at the largest target, making a deep cut across his chest. The poor soul who had to face her growled and backhanded her, knocking her to the ground. The leader tossed the sword away, "Stupid girl-" He stopped as I threw my sword out of rage, hitting him in the shoulder. I could feel my non red eye burning with rage while the other stayed calm. I pulled down my hood and spoke "One of you mentioned that you need me, if you leave these people alone, I will go with you." To my relief they talked amongst each other and their leader spoke "Very well then, we only came for you anyway."
I calmly stepped forward and picked up Faylinn, as I put her back in the carriage and shut the door I told the driver to get going. "Alright, other than calling me by my Drachen title and enraging the strongest little girl I know, what else do you want?" Their leader smiled and simply said. "The chief is going to love your spirit." He bowed and led the way as I clutched my tome in my hand.
"You're going to hate us but, we need you to use your dragon abilities to survive this"
