Grace froze in fear. "Go. Don't let my grandma see you." Grace managed to whisper. The boy climbed higher in the tree. "Grace are you even listening? I said you're going to be late for school. Move along now." said her grandmother. "Geeze, she sounds so stressed." Grace thought to herself. "She's going to find out sooner or later that I can't find Samuel." Grace thought to herself almost breaking out into shivers of fear, sadness, and anger. "Where's Samuel?" asked her grandma. Grace stopped walking through the tall grass. What was she going to say? Tell the truth, and see her grandma break into tears? Or lie, and once her grandmother figures out she'll be punished? Tell the truth and maybe have her and her grandma go look for him together? Or lie, and never see him again? She made her choice. " Well, this morning I saw him go to say goodbye to the horses." said Grace, she couldn't stop shaking with fear which made her voice sound jittery. She couldn't believe she just lied to her own grandma. What will she do when her grandma finds out? " Maybe she won't find out?" Grace thought to herself.
After her grandma went to the horses' stalls to get Samuel. Grace went back to the apple tree. "It's safe now." Grace said to the boy. " You didn't tell me your name earlier, what is it?" Grace asked. "What's yours?" asked the boy. "Grace. Now what's yours?" Grace asked. "Elijah, but people usually call me Eli for short." said the boy- Eli - in return. "Do you know where my brother, Samuel, is?" asked Grace desperately. He surely had to have seen Samuel walk by this morning. Unless Samuel ran away at night. "Hey, um, Eli, I need your help..." Grace explained every thing that had happened since her mother had drove out to work that day, the day she had died. He seemed interested. " You know what Grace I..." Eli was about to say, but that was when Grace's grandmother came back.
