I walk to the dock and look at my phone. 5 missed calls from my mother.. I slowly grab all my bags and hear my name being called. I throw my phone back into my bag, slip on my sandals and walk to the car in my bathing suit.
Oh, no.. I internally groan.
I trudge my way up the hill to see someone leaving the driveway. I can't see who it is exactly.
I walk to my car and see my mom leaning against the other side of my car. She whispers, "I knew you'd be here.. I just knew it." All I can do is nod my head.
My mom gets closer and the smell hits me like a brick wall; she's drunk. My mom never drinks, so there's definitely something wrong. I don't dare ask, but I continue to place all my bags into the backseat. I begin pulling my tote back out of the pile and rummage through it.
I feel a burning sensation and I peek out of the corner of my eye, and I see her watching me. Well, more like glaring. I don't question that either, I just turn back to my bag and pull out my pullover shirt, shorts, sunglasses, phone and my keys, then I throw my bag back into the seat and close my door.
I walk around to my side of the car and open my car's driver door, laying all the things into the driver seat. I slip off my sandals and pull on my shorts and shirt. My mom sighs and I look at her as I slide my sandals back on.
"So.. Why are you here?" I try to ask. She shakes her head and sighs again. "Mom... Is- is everything okay?"
She tries to smile as I pull my hair up into a messy bun, not caring what the consequences of my messy, thick hair may be later. I pick up my phone, keys, and sunglasses out of the seat and slide into it. I push the key into the ignition and switch it on, the engine sputters, but doesn't give out. I slide my sunglasses on and put my phone into the console.
I peek out my window and see my mom just standing, looking at her feet. I close my door and lean over to open hers. She doesn't budge. I clear my throat and she slowly looks up.
"Well..." I start but don't know how to finish. She doesn't look at me or respond.
"Are you going to get in or- well, I mean- I'm getting ready to leave I've been here for three days." I try again. "I'm going home. Are you coming or not?"
She looks up and walks to the door of the car and peeks inside. She looks at me a smiles, " I know I haven't been the best mother-"
"Mom stop it, come on. Get in." I smile at her and pat the seat.
"No, Carly, let me finish," She holds her hands up, warning me not to interrupt. "Now, I know I haven't been the best mother- at times, but I know I had to of been to have a daughter as amazing as you. I've missed you so much, and I know last time we seen each other we weren't on good terms, but now-" she smiles. "I think I got lucky." She waves her finger at me.
"Mom I got lucky to have a mother as understanding as you. I mean, you know me so well," I motion around me.
My mother nods her head and slowly climbs into the car. I smile and she closes the door. I put the car into drive, and slowly pull out of the driveway. I drive until we see don't see trees, we see fields, then eventually buildings.
We're back in town. My home town. I haven't been here for months, I went on summer vacation out of state and recently got back. I've been avoiding the wrath of my family, because how I left wasn't the best way to go.
