What do you say to someone you have not spoke to in 60 years, when the last thing you said to them; was that you cannot love them as you once did? How do you look them in the eye and not remember how you broke their heart? She knew well enough she would have to face him eventually, but what would she say?
Ruive was so quick to make herself scarce that she had not realised where she had escaped to until the memories came flooding back. She found herself sitting upon the same rail of the same balcony as she did many years before. Her eyes fixated on the spot where he sat, where he broke down her walls, and where he listened to her pour her heart and soul out for hours. The more she stared at it, the more she remembered him, his eyes, his nose, his hair, the shape of his face, the shadows the night cast across him. It was all so familiar, but so far away. She had to let him go, it was eating away at her. He is gone, and he is never coming back... None of them are.
"He sat right there." She mumbled.
Legolas emerged from the doorway, she knew he would find her eventually. She had felt his eyes on her the whole time during the council, willing her to look at him.
"He made me feel things I had not felt in so long, he made me feel alive again."
Legolas looked down sadly, wishing it was him that made her feel that way.
"He made me feel the way I did, when I was with you. I thought I would never feel that way again after you, but I did, and I do not think I could ever feel that way again."
Tears of crystal slowly streaked down her cheeks.
"Why not." Legolas asked, speaking for the first time.
Ruive tore her eyes away from where he had once sat and looked at Legolas through strands of hair and glistening tears.
"Because if I love you, and I lost you, my heart would not bear it."
Legolas shook his head and took a step closer to her.
"You will not lose me."
"How do you know that?!" She snapped.
"Do you think I planned to lose them?! I wait for the day when the Gods see fit that I am to die, but Mahal and the Valinor know it will only be after I have lost everyone I care about! I will not let anyone else die on my watch."
By now Ruive was standing face to face with Legolas. He took this opportunity to take in her appearance, she had change so much and yet so little since he last saw her. She had definitely grow taller, the top of her head was level with his mouth now as opposed to when it use to sit just under his chin, and her hair was much longer now brushing halfway down her thighs rather than just below her hips. But she was still the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, it was a fierce and dominating beauty that no man could deny.
"I have to let them go, I have to let him go." she whispered, her eyes glued to her feet.
She raised her head and looked deeply into to his familiar blue eyes, staring at her reflection in them.
"I have to let you go."
Legolas stared at her with pleading eyes, begging her to take back her words, to let herself fall in love with him again. They both knew what they felt for each other is still in their hearts, she had simply buried it beneath years of heartache and built her walls so high that no one could climb it. But he was going to try.
There we go, first Ruive/Legolas action with much more to come. The development between the two will be slow as I feel like rushing straight back into being in love with each other defeats the whole purpose of Ruive's character complication. I know this is short but it was solely devoted to establishing where their relationship is at. Tell me what you though, bye!!
P.S. Yes I know that the last line sounds exactly like the song Beneath You're Beautiful by Labyrinth, it kinda just happened so I rolled with it.
