Chapter 2:
I had to admit, that I was extremley nervous for my first day of high school. Over the years in our hide out area, I'd kept track on modern education and clothing, but I had never been to a high school before. The barons kept us hidden from any humans or anything living for a matter of fact. So what I was saying is that I haven't had any human interaction (expect for eating) since the 1800's. I was so screwed.
They would probably know that I wasn't one of them right when I walked through the door. Even the freshman would at least have a clue what they were doing.
The car pulled up to the curb. My probation officer , Officer Coleman turned to me. He was a zombie like myself expect more tamed when it came to hunger. He was tall and buff which kind of scared me. Our story to the humans was that we were father and daughter who moved out to Holdenburg because of his job. As for me, I was the moody teenage daughter who dreaded her own life and couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. You had to admit, it was a really good cover.
"You know what you're doing, right?" he asked.
I frowned a little bit. "Yeah. Go in there, be tortured by the flesh, don't eat anyone, come home and cry." He raised any eyebrow at my pessimism.
With that, I rolled my eyes and forced myself to get out of the car and face the music. I tried to pep talk myself the whole walk to the door.
You can do this Justine. You are 183 years old, don't act like a baby. Just go in there and act humanly or whatever. Maybe you'll make friends. This isn't helping, is it? Just get your ass in there.
After taking one deep breath, I walked in through the door. No one stared at me. No one noticed anything. At first. Then they turned at looked at me. At first they just stood there talking and laughing with their friends.
"People! Get to class!" someone yelled from behind me. I turned to see Officer Coleman in a uniform that said security on it. So that was how he was keeping an eye on me. He pointed towards a small office to the left of me and I walked to it.
There was a woman behind a desk at the front and her fingers clicked against the keys as her eyes focused on the computer screen. She looked up at me and smiled. "How may I help you?"
"Um, I'm Justine McCaul. I'm new he-" I said until she cut me off.
"Yes, Miss. McCaul. We've been expecting you," she started. After gathering up some files and papers she continued again. "I've highlighted all of your classes on the map so you'll easily be able to find them. I hope you enjoy your time here in Holdenburg High School. Would you like a tour guide? I can call one of the students to help you."
"No thanks. I think I can find my way," I said awkwardly and walked out of the office.
A bell went off and jumped. The hallways were empty and I was left alone.
After trying multiple times to find my english class, I thought why didn't I ask for the tour guide?Eventually, I realized that I was holding the map upside down and easily found my way.
When I waked in, students looked up at me and the teacher stopped talking. They were obviously in the middle of something important.
"Are you the new student?" the teacher asked. I nodded.
She pointed to a desk towards the back and said,"You can just take a seat back there. We're just taking a test on the novel we read Gone with the Wind. Did you read it in your old school?"
