I woke up on the cold forest floor. It was dawn and little light seeped through the canopy of trees. I dug my hands into the soft soil and opened my eyes. There was something different about me. My senses were sharper and I felt ravenous. I pushed myself off of the floor and looked around in confusion. How did I get here? Where was Cameron? Was Holdenburg really destroyed?
I looked down at my shoulder. Teeth marks remained in it and a little bit of skin was missing. Fear overtook me as I realized what happened. I had become one of them. I was a zombie.
My head sharply turned to the right. I could hear something in the distance.
"What do we do now?" someone called. I followed the sound of the voices. They led me to the main square in the town. I joined in to the group of people surrounding the mayor.
"People listen. There are going to have to be some changes around here. We're going to have to leave this town. It's not safe. If others knew that we existed, we'd all be dead," he said clearly.
"So we have to abandon everything? We can't just leave our lives and start new ones!" someone yelled.
"I know but we have no choice. We'll leave at dawn. If you want to bring any belongings, pack them. Cameron here, says he knows how the zombie powers work."
"Did you find the journal?" someone called. He shook his head no. I glared up at Cameron. He did this to me. Changed me into a monster. Killed my family.
"He will explain it all to us when we arrive at our hide out place. As for now, do not eat anyone. It will cause attention. If you do, we'll have to kill you."
"But he's the one that changed us all along with someone else!" I yelled. Everyone turned towards me.
"He told me when he attacked me yesterday."
Everyone's mouths dropped open.
"Cameron! How could you?" someone screamed.
"Let's hang him!" someone else yelled.
The mayor sorted out his thoughts. "Cameron, is this true?"
"Yes it is. But I did it for our own goods," he began but the mayor interrupted.
"Cameron, I here by banish you from this town. Do not ever come near us again or we will kill you."
"But you need my help," he exclaimed.
"I think we can figure it out on our own."
People wandered off to their destroyed homes and Cameron came towards me.
"How could you Justine?"
"How could you?" I yelled. "You turned me into this monster!"
"I did it because I love you," he replied.
"Well I don't think I feel the same," I told him as I slid the ring off of my finger and shoved it towards his chest. "You can have this back."
I could see the anger rising in his eyes.
"Leave," I demanded.
He turned around on his heels and walked towards the forest but the turned back and said,"Oh, I almost forgot." He threw down a notebook on the ground and left.
I picked it up and brushed the dirt off of it. In fine print on the cover it said:
Owen Patel.
