I lied against the stump of an old tree and let out a sigh of relief. Dawn was just breaking through the clouds and I had finished my hunting. The body of a young woman lied on the ground in front of me, with blood all over the place.
My first week in Holdenburg was officially over and surprisingly, it had gone well. I hit a rough patch at first with the whole body disappearance thing, but then it gradually got better when things started heating up between Greg and I. I had gotten a little curious that he wasn't that afraid of me though.
The thoughts in my mind were beginning to change a little bit. Maybe Holdenburg wasn't so bad after all. Who was I kidding? It absolutely sucked.
I was sitting at the place I used to go when I was a human. It was a big oak tree with a large, thick branch that stretched out that you could sit on and enjoy the view of the sun. It was a place I would go with someone I once loved. But I was in a good mood this morning and I wasn't going to ruin it by thinking of those old memories.
My feet swung underneath me as I sat on the branch. I would probably get splinters trying to keep my balance by holding onto the rough bark.
It was so relaxing just watching as the world was beginning to wake up. My eyelids closed, but the rest of my senses were sharp. Few leaves rustled as they got tousled in with the wind. It smelt fresh, like an early morning after it just rained. I could almost taste the morning dew on my taste buds.
But then I sensed something else. It was as if the whole world had stopped moving. Almost stunned silence spread across the forest. It was like everything had suddenly turned into ice. I turned around to see a man, tall and lean wearing casual jeans and a fitted gray sweatshirt. He had brown hair and green eyes. He was muscular and familiar.
I would know him from anywhere. I could pick him out if he were a pin in a stack of hay. No way I thought. It can't be. But it was.
It was Cameron.
In that moment, I could've sworn I felt my whole body crumble down into a pile of nothing. I was too stunned to move, breathe, think, blink. Almost as if I were glued to the ground.
We stared at each other in awe for a while until he awkwardly took his hands out of his pockets and stepped forward.
"Hello Justine." His spoke eloquently without flaws. My chapped lips parted a bit.
He looked down and made a little sideways smile. He had dimples.
"It's nice to see you." I said nothing but turned to face the view I was looking at before. Cameron took a seat next to me on the right. He put all his weight on his arms which he rested behind him.
"You look different. Nice," he murmured softly in attempt to start a conversation.
"Your hair's longer," he noted gingerly taking a strand and playing with it.
When I gave no reply, he sighed heavily.
"You're impossible." Anger began to rise in the pit of my stomach.
"I'm impossible? You've got to be shitting me! I can't believe you had the balls to show your face here. Do you know how long it's been? Over a century! Fuck, I don't know how you can live with yourself!" I yelled.
He stared at me in astonishment.
"Are you really Justine?"
"What the hell is that supposed to mean? Of course I am!"
My breathing came out ragged.
"The Justine I knew would never swear or go off on me like that," he mumbled.
