It was on this day in the village that the Woodmer family got together to celebrate Maple’s birthday. She was turning 16, making her 5 years older then her brother and as she said, “ More mature and sophisticated” Only her mother, father and brother were there to celebrate, as they were the lasts of the Woodmers but, Maple didn’t mind. Now the four sat in the living room belting out the birthday song.
Eating cake they opened the presents. Her father gave Maple quite a bit of pocket money to spend how she wished and her mother, a dress and some barrettes. When Maple pulled on the snug fitting dress her mother let out little coo’s and pushed her daughter out to where to men sat waiting.
Her father catching sight of his magnificent daughter let out a slight laugh as he teased “ We shall have you married yet”. He ignored the death glare that was shot his way. For, Maple had expressed her disgust for marriage but, her parents were certain that her mind would change.
The dress was simple. Made from red silk with embroidered lace at the hem and cream coloured stitching. The barrettes were red and black to match the dress in a crossword patch pattern.
Jack handed her a box with a bad wrapping job and a messy bow stuck on the top. It was a little muddy and the cardboard box was wet with whatever was inside. Just as she was undoing the brown paper and doing up her hair with the yellow bow, the lid popped off and a slimy, green thing jumped out. It jumped like an athlete across the room nearly touching the ceiling and landed right in Maple’s lap, splattering mud all over her new dress. As Maple screamed it gave a loud, deep noise, which sounded like a burp and jumped to the floor with a thud. The room went silence. Only Jack could be heard suppressing a laugh. Maple’s dress had a dirty blob on the front and there was slime all over her stockings. She stood up to see that her present was in fact a frog. She looked at her parents then around the room then finally let her stern eyes rest on her brother. Maple gave him such a look of disappointment, disbelief, embarrassment, anger and pure, pure hatred.
Jack who was now rolling on the ground with laughter managed to sit up and say “ you should have seen the look on your face” before he plopped back down to the floor. That brat then tried to imitate her for everyone to see. Mr. And Mrs. Woodmer exchanged a look of concern as they rushed to separate their children before Maple lost her temper and it turned into a fist fight. You could see Maple vibrating, shaking with anger, ready to blow as their parents led them away. Maple and her mother to the bathroom to get cleaned up and Maple’s dad and Jack ( still laughing) to the kitchen to have a guy to guy conversation. Maple wailed away in the other room immaturely , scared her mother would not be able to get the stain out of her clothes. Ring! Saved by the parents!
