Mrs. Woodmer sat by the fire in her room unable to sleep. She looked in the fire and watched the flames dance and swirl. They played with the embers, coddeling them like they were their own children. Holding them close to their hearts. Rocking them, popping and whispering a lullaby for a good night.
A tear ran down Mrs. Woodmer’s cheek. The embers made her think and remember her children. Maple. Jack. “ My babies, my embers” she thought.
From behind her a door closed, foot steps followed, then a comforting hand lay on the shoulder.
“ You should be in bed” It was Mr. Woodmer. “Still thinking about them” he asked even though he already knew the answer.
“Oh Jeremy! how do you think there doing? Do you think their safe? What if Jealousy gave them a hard time? What if there dead Jeremy, or lost? Do you think they miss us?” Mrs. Woodmer replied panicking. Mrs. Woodmer now burst into tears that rained upon the floor.
“Lauren , honey please don’t worry they will be fine. They know we love them. They’ll make us proud. You know that. We know our Maple, she’s a real leader and Jack’s pretty strong. Please don’t worry. Your not doing the children any favours by staying up late worrying about them. Maple wouldn’t like it, you know that. She hates to be fussed over.
“ ok” sighs Lauren.
With that she placed her shaking unstable hand in her husband's and let him tuck her into bed. Behind them the fire continued to burn as the embers slowly died out.
