"Nii-chan, Nii-chan! Can we buy ice-cream?"
My little sister pulled my sleeve as we walked down the path to our apartment block. Sighing, I shook my head for the nth time.
"No, I've told you already, if you eat something now you can't eat dinner."
"I can! I have a big appetite like Nii-chan too!" Maya grinned as she placed her hands on her hips. Not after two seconds of her looking smug, I gave her a hand chop on the head earning a small cry from Maya. Only on Maya I would actually restrain my strength. Everyone else? Screw them.
Well actually maybe Mai- ...you know what, forget it. She's no longer a part of my life anymore so it doesn't even matter, although that naggy side of me kept objecting. Seeing how Maya looked down, I rubbed her head.
"How about we go down again to eat ice-cream after dinner?" Her eyes brightened up immediately and a big smile adorned her face.
"Yay~! Thanks Onii-chan!" She threw herself at me and hung at my arm causing me to stagger.
"Oi! Get off me, I can't walk if you keep hugging my arm like this!" After a short giggle from Maika, we entered the lift. Inside, there was a single old lady fiddling with all her bags of groceries. All the bags seemed to be full and way too many for a single person to carry, much less an old lady. Before long, one of the plastic bags slipped out of her grasp. Before a single apple hit the floor, I stretched out my hand quickly, successfully saving the bag. I simply thanked my reflexes from this.
"Obaa-san, it's dangerous to carry so many bags like this! Let me help you." The old lady smiled.
"My my, what a kind soul you are, thank you so much."
I took the two biggest bags while Maya took remaining two from the old lady. We reached the old lady's floor and followed her to the apartment. As she unlocked the door, she beamed at us.
"Um... You two are the Asao siblings right? Thank you very much again for your help."
"You're welcome Obaa-san! Call us if you need anymore help!" Maya beamed back. After waving bye to the old lady, we were back in the lift again, on our way up to our floor.
"Nee Onii-chan~"
"Hmm?" I hummed in reply.
"Just now that old lady looked a little bit like that boy who played with me at the park, do you think they could be related?" I furrowed my eyebrows, have I been too careless watching over Maya?
"What boy? What's his name?" I asked.
"Shiki Hajime, we played together once while Onii-chan went on an errand. Why Onii-chan?" Sighing, I placed my hands gently onto Maya's shoulder and looked into her eyes.
"Listen Maya, don't simply play with other kids if I'm not there watching. If anything happens to you or that boy, I'll be the one responsible. Understand?"
Maya pouted then reluctantly mumbled, "I understand, Onii-chan." Satisfied, I rubbed her on the head.
"Let's have dinner first then we'll go downstairs for ice-cream, okay?"
"Okay!" Maya immediately cheered up. As we walked the halls to our apartment, we continued chatting about everyday things, about the latest Pokemon game, Mum's cooking and etc. An ordinary life of the Asao siblings, if I had to give it a title. We were so absorbed, we failed to notice one thing out of the ordinary.
Growing cracks along the ceiling. It was only after we reached our door we heard the strange rumbling sounds.
"Onii-chan, what's that sound?" Looking down, I saw Maya fearfully tugging my sleeve. I finally noticed the cracks, already creating a much bigger web in the ceiling. The rumbling sounds grew louder at a terrifying rate. At that age, I already knew what was going to happen, even though I wasn't sure of how yet.
