(chapter one.)

I SIGHED AS I woke up, rubbing my face. Another day in the end of the world. I was exhausted even after a full nights rest, something I knew a lot of people didn't have the luxury of. I eventually got up and began shoving on a pair of jeans and a flannel before rushing down stairs. My whole family was already up and eating. I was always the last person awake.

I remembered the days before the dead started walking, when we'd have a big family brunch every Sunday. We still all ate together, but it wasn't anywhere near the same. There was always this unspoken tension, sometimes unnoticeable. It was to be expected with over half of our family now dead. Or, if you asked the rest of my family, sick.

"Morning," Beth, my twin sister, smiled at me. I smiled back and sat down beside her at the table. We always sat in the same seats at the table out of habit.

"How'd you sleep, girls?" Daddy asked us. I shrugged, taking a bite of my scrambled eggs. Lucky for us we lived on a farm, so we were better off than most people out there--that is, if there were any more people out there.

"Fine," I said while Beth and Maggie, our older sister, said, "Good."

"You comin' huntin' with me today, Char?" Otis asked before taking a swig of his juice. Otis and his wife Patricia were close family friends. He was an alright guy I suppose, though I was never all that close with him. Patricia was gullible and easily manipulated, but still a good person at heart.

I glanced at daddy. I had a love for hunting, but it was rare that my father was okay with it. Before the apocalypse, I was only allowed on special occasions. He sighed as he rubbed a hand over his face before nodding, "You're allowed--but be safe, and stick with Otis."

"Thanks daddy!" I smiled over at him before turning to Otis, "I'm so in!"

Otis and I were out hunting when we saw a deer. It was so beautiful, especially now that it was a rare occasion to see something so pure. I sighed as Otis aimed his gun at the creature and fired. When the deer fell I was shocked to see a little boy fall as well. I ran over to him and saw two other men. One had medium brown hair and was in a sheriff uniform, blue eyes wide with panic. The other had dark brown curly hair and was wearing a tank top and cargo pants.

"Otis, you shot a kid!" I hissed at Otis, "Quick, follow me!" I said before running towards my house, the two guys hot on my heels. My heart was pounding with nerves. I don't know how long we were running before we got to the fence and I called out, "Daddy, we need you!" Daddy came running out the door.

"What happened?!" He shouted back. Beth stood beside him, clinging onto her boyfriend, Jimmy.

"Otis shot this boy!" I said as the sheriff ran inside with his boy. Daddy went inside with him but the other man stayed out. When Beth came running down the stairs the other man looked at me funny. I hugged Beth and told her what happened.
