Chapter 01

Graceful footsteps along the hall was heard. Kogitsunemaru, the current King of Spades, just knew who could make even trifling things sounded so enchanting. The door, soon, was gently pushed open by his Queen, Mikazuki Munechika.

"You're calling me, Kogitsunemaru? Such urgency, even Mitsutada is already here."

The Queen spent a split second to see the Jack, Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, already positioning himself beside the King on his throne.

"Yes, now come closer, Mikazuki. I have something we all need to discuss."

The Queen hid his soft giggles behind his sleeve, "Let me guess, this is about my successor?"

"I see you're still able to read my mind like you always do," the King flashed his grin, "But for clarity's sake, Mitsutada?"

"Yes, Your Majesty," the Jack slightly bowed and on he spoke. "From previous conversations, we have decided that it is time for new Spade royalties to take over the throne. As of now, the King has found his successor, a noble-born young man named Hakata. He has stated that he's ready, if the time comes for him to rule Spades."

The King nodded his head in affirmation.

"I, too, have found mine. A young man called Atsushi. I believe he's suited to be the Jack of Spades in the future. And now, the problem at hand," the Jack turned to look at the Queen.

"The Queen successor is nowhere to be found," the Queen said solemnly, "What a problem, we're facing."

"We need to find yours as soon as we can, Mikazuki. We are running out of time, other kingdoms are ready with their successors already. And we all know both Atsushi and Hakata can't take the Jack and my place without a Queen."

The Queen smiled. "I know. I have done my part of search as well. And for this very matter, I would like to ask for your permission."

"Do you have something in mind?"

"I'd like to personally search for and pick up the next Queen. Alone."

The Jack quickly protested, "My Queen, we can't possibly let you go alone outside the palace without any guards!"

The Queen remained quiet. The silence was simply deafening until the King's sigh could be heard.

"All right, you have my permission. I acknowledge your sharpness that I've seen for years we've been together and I trust your judgement. But could you please take the Jack with you?"

"No, Kogitsunemaru. I shall do this alone."

"But, Your Majesty—"

The King quickly cut the Jack's words, "the Queen has spoken and I have given him permission as well. Let's just believe in him."

The Jack sighed heavily.

"I will depart tomorrow at dawn. The sooner I start, the better it will be. Now I shall take my leave to see the process of my preparation at hand."

"You've started the preparation already. You're too confident about getting my permission!" the King laughed.

The Queen had begun to walk towards the door. "But I did get it, didn't I?" he said, leaving the room with a subtle smirk thrown to the King.
