Kyra's POV
Well, you can't fight fog.
But you can rise above it.
I sluggishly pulled my dagger back into my belt, the darkness fighting every one of my movements. I transformed and flew out of the black mist. I looked down once I was a good distance above it to see a few snaking tendrils following my movements before falling back to the fog. A few of the dirt-wolves were still pacing around the fog, but more were darting in and out of it. My stomach turned to lead as I realized that a few had blood on their claws. The air around me hissed.
"Do they know of your darkness?"
I slashed the air around me with my talons, but it did absolutely nothing. I flew to the ground as the Overlord's voice rang in my ears. "You have much sorrow. How much will you gain when another of your brethren is gone?" I transformed outside of the darkness and looked around for the source of the voice. "What is your name? Who shall I remember as the one who hid in the light while blood was spilled in the shadows?"
That was it.
I drew my dagger and shouted at the air like a crazy person. "You wanna know who I am? I'm the one who finally defeated General Pythor. I'm the one who's lived on the streets for years. I'm the one who lost my brother and brought back a scrap of what he was. A scrap of the Zane Julien that I knew and that scrap destroyed you. What do you think I can do, huh?" I was screaming at this point, a dark, hungry satisfaction to it all. Years of pent-up anger and grief were exploding out of my mouth like missiles as the air around me shimmered with fear- whose, I couldn't tell. "My name is Kyra Julien. You're going to remember me, all right. I'm going to be the one who finally got rid of the Overlord." With that, I spun around and plunged my dagger into the dark, thick fog. The blade began to glow, just slightly, but it drank in the black, and the mist began to recede. It wasn't obsidian, I had realized days ago.
It was concentrated dark matter.
Little by little, the dirt-wolves became visible and wolf by wolf, I cut them down with Kage and my grey tornado. After a few minutes, the other ninja joined in, spreading out in every direction to kill the beasts while I obliterated the fog. One or two of the monsters tried to attack me under their fading cover of darkness, but only a few scratched me. I don't know if I could have felt pain. I felt dark, triumphant, powerful. At seventeen minutes, the battle was won. I panted, exhausted and elated and really wishing I'd brought water. "Kyra?" Someone laid a hand on my shoulder. I whacked it off, my dagger at their throat before I even realized I'd done it. When I realized it was Cole, I blushed. I had to look like a madman, with my bloodshot eyes and scratched cheeks. "Sorry! Sorry! I'm still pretty jumpy." He took a shaky breath. "Kyra, it's Jay." I sighed. "What, no thank you? No, gee, great job, Kyra? I thought I was pretty impressive for my first time with the Overlord." I looked at him more closely, taking in the tears in his eyes that I didn't catch at my first glance. "Wait, what's going on?" He took another deep breath. "Kyra, Jay got bitten."
Wait... No. The rush of power I'd felt only moments before throbbed, pulsed, a reminder of the beast I was.
Please, please no.
"He's dead."
