The heart monitor is whining, a shrill, aching noise. I grit my teeth: this is the fifth time today, and every single time, I'm scared it's the last. I take a deep breath and brush myself off, pushing up from the bed. By the Master, let me have strength. I open the door and begin to make my way to the operating room to be briefed. I sit down on the cot, apparently early, my thoughts on my brother.

Please hang on just a little longer, buddy.

I look out the window to the snowfall.  He'll like that when he wakes up: my brother loves the cold. A nurse walks in, a clipboard in hand. "There's our brace girl!" She says cheerily. "Now, just a few routine questions and then the doctors can get started. Name?" I take a deep breath, heart humming. "Kyra Julien." She nods and scribbles it down. "Connection to transplantee?" "He's my brother," I reply.

Oh Master, let this work, Zane.

One year later:

"It's not him." I frown at the metal body on the cot. "Daddy, it's not Zane." My father squeezes my hand. "Its okay. It will be." I shake my head, willing him, needing him, to understand. "No, it won't be. Zane died. You don't..." My vision blurs with tears. He's not listening. "You don't get it."

He clicks the on switch anyway, and my life changes forever.
