Kyra's POVI reeled. This was not happening. No way, no how. Jay could not possibly be dead. It was a trick. A scheme to see how well I'd hold up. Right? Right? But... There was something in Coles eyes, in his posture, like he was being held together by adrenaline and clear thread. There was something in the air, stringy and light, like snow and ash. "Show me." Cole hesitated. "Show me. Now." "Kyra, it's not pretty. I... I almost threw up." His voice cracked. I grabbed the front of his gi. "Cole, you show me right now or I swear..." I let my voice trail off so his imagination could run wild. He finally nodded in surrender.
I don't remember how I got my legs to carry me forward, or how I went blank when I saw Jay with blood on his everything.
The others told me about that.
I remember falling to the ground and not being able to move as JayJayJay arched across my brain because this was not real this was not allowed Jay was not not not dead and my eyes were wrong and I shouldn't be sobbing because it wasn't, couldn't be real and oh the Master it was real no no no no no. I remember drawing a breath and thinking it through, lightning crackling around me. This was literally my element. Nya knew this, and she was suffering the loss of her boyfriend. I took another breath, a little stronger than the last. "Everyone either turn around or close your eyes. Or do both." Kai rolled his red eyes, Nya clinging to his arm like a life preserver. "We're all just as upset as you are, Kyra, but this isn't a time for jokes. What are we going to tell Sensei?" I glared up at him. "Turn. Around. Now." I guess that clicked something for him, because he did turn around, an almost fearful look on his face. Everyone else followed suit, Zane giving me a confused glance.
I turned to put my hands on Jay's bloody chest and closed my eyes. "Nya tell 'em." I could almost hear her confusion. "About..." "You know what! Now tell them or by the Master I will scream!" I closed my eyes and tried to drown out the storm and her words. I focused on my memories of Jay: his easy laugh, love for Nya (come back), competitive nature, and most of all, his face when he held his lightning, like a small child, dazzled. I let that face arc through my head, pictured him so, so alive, gasping for air, and for... What else? Nya. He needed Nya. And he needed to stop having a hole I his throat. I opened my eyes, imagining a thick blue cord, one I could reach, touch, and yank as hard as I needed to, one made of threads of me, as well as him. I gave us a common ground. I gave us a common enemy. I tied him to me, like a stitch in a wound.
Pull, pull, pull
Jay sat up, gasping, injuries closing, and I almost yelped with triumph. I could hear Nya winding down her tale. I looked at Jay a little more closely and held a finger to my lips. I pointed at Nya. Grab her, I mouthed. His eyes narrowed with mirth, and I was reminded of the day, so, so, long ago when I'd first seen his smile. The memory was instantly stifled by my exhaustion. My vision frayed as he stood up, not very shakily considering he'd been dead a few moments ago. I closed my eyes to listen for Nya. "Can we turn around now?" Lloyd. I felt a pang of regret for his going through this. Then I heard Nya's cry.
Also a few noises like she was smacking something.
Someone caught me under the arm as I fell backwards. "Kyra?" Zane. I let myself lean against him. My veins felt like they were filled with lead. "Are you alright? Did you hurt yourself?" I laughed a little, then. "I'm okay," I told him. I could hear laughter, but it sounded far away, hazy, dim. "Tired," I murmured to him. He scooped me up, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. I could still hear my family in the distance, celebrating- if I were less tired, I would join in. My mind was wrapped in cotton.
"Let's go home," I told him.
He held me closer, and I fell asleep- safe, tired, at peace.
Home, indeed.
