Nico
"You're kidding," his words were fainter than a whisper.
The goddess heard him anyway.
"It's. Yours." she said.
Nico suppressed the shiver raking over his body.
His eyes was glued on the object of terror, the crown of Ptolemy. Its luster is blinding... its powers vibrating all over the room. He could feel his hairs zinging.
"No," he whispered.
Nekhbet was taken aback.
"What?"
"No," he said, stronger this time.
The goddess' lips broke (well, it's ugly) into a traumatizing snarl.
"NO?!?!?! YOU DARE DEFY ME?!"
Nico tried his best to mask his disgust as her putrid breath fanned his face.
"Get away from me."
She bared her fangs and attacked him. Her claws sunk on his shoulders.
"&<?>:$#^%$&*&Y%!!"
"YOU DO NOT GET TO CHOOSE YOUR FATE, SILLY DEMIGOD!!"
Nico bit back his scream of pain.
"I-I can. And I w-will!"
Nekhbet's beady eyes stared at his dark ones.
"I do not take no for an answer."
"What the #$%^<:>"^$%& is wrong with you?! You can't just barge in my life and tell me what to do!"
Her claws sunk deeper on his shoulder blades. He cursed.
"You do not know how long I have waited for the right one, Nico di Angelo."
Damn. That sounded so wrong in many levels.
"You are the strongest of the Ptolemy line. This is your life. This is your responsibility. Think of how gigantic your scope of power is. Think you imbecile! Th-"
"Your persuasion is outstanding," Nico said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Take it, di Angelo."
"No."
Something heavy draped over his head. He couldn't move, couldn't lift his hand to see the object weighing him down.
"W-What did y-you do?! WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
Nekhbet withdrew, her claws dripping from his blood.
"It looks good on you."
Nico's vision tunneled, his eyesight sharper than he ever dreamed of.
"Too much p--"
The vulture goddess waved her claws dismissively.
"Yes, yes. The power kills weaklings like you. You don't have to worry, you are somewhat dead anyway."
Biting, nasty words ran through his brain. He wished he could open his mouth to speak. Speech didn't seem practical, since he was struggling to keep himself afloat.. trying his best to keep his head above the waters of indestructible power.
"I-"
"-will kill me. Yes, yes. I know. But you just can't. Perish that thought. We need not to fight. I am Nekhbet, the protector of the crown... and you are the heir. You are a demigod of death, I am the patron of the strong. We should get along just fine."
"N-"
"Never?" The goddess cackled. "Let's see about that."
Nico's stomach churned.
"W-"
He felt bile rising in his throat. Letting go, he let the contents of his stomach spill on the marble floors.
"Disgusting," she muttered.
He tried to heave himself up, just so he can strangle the hag to death. He ended up crouched on the floor, his insides burning, his limbs shaking. The magical pressure of the crown trampling him down to a useless heap of bones.
Nekhbet rearranged her feathers before giving him a glance.
"Farewell for now, my little one. We will see each other soon."
Nico, in all his shivering and panting, managed to glare at the goddess. His eyesight was so sharp, he could see the pores of her face.. and her not so minute repulsive facial features, in 3D.
"G-get l-l-lost," he gasped.
Her only response was a loud cackle.. then she disappeared into the Duat.
He let his head fall, his vision blurring red.
Gods, no. he thought.
He wasn't afraid to die, no he wasn't. Yet he wished he'll die in battle. It may not be grand, still.. he'll die fighting.
This is not what he envisioned his death to be.
No, he would not die. He wasn't alone anymore. He had friends. A family.
He dragged himself to the nearby table. Leaning heavily on it, he took shaky breaths.
And for the third time in his life, he prayed.
