~Kayden's POV~
"Alright guys, I'll see you soon." Zeke and Wyatt waved goodbye as they made their way out to their car, leaving Jared and I. He sat down on the couch again and took a swig of his beer.
"Where did Katherine go?" I shrugged and sipped my beer, letting the cool liquid travel smoothly down.
"Hell if I know. She always disappears once she finishes her work. Probably too scared to be around me." I winked, but I knew she wasn't scared of me. I've been trying to weeks to figure out why she acts as if everything is normal. Like talking about murdering women who flirted for too long, or the boys and I going out and beating the shit out of drug dealers for crossing us was as normal as me saying we went to the circus. I couldn't figure that girl out.
"Haha, but seriously Kayden, what's with her? I mean, she doesn't talk much unless it's to Sarah behind closed doors. Every time they are together, they are whispering about something, and then stop talking all together when anyone walks in. I've threatened it out of Sarah, and she says that Katherine's 'just going through some things'. How well do you really know her?"
I hadn't done any extensive background checks , but it seemed to check out. I hadn't been given any reason not to trust her, but thinking about it, maybe Jared was right. She didn't talk about her family or friends ever, and kept all conversations strictly to business. She seemed to know what she was talking about, clearly, after today's meeting. But other than today, I can't remember a time she had an answer before I did.
She was either learning quickly, or was lying through her teeth. I dismissed Jared considering I wasn't in the mood to see him, and went to find Katherine. I knocked on her door twice before barging in, but found it empty.
Where the fuck did she go? I assumed the only other place she was allowed would have been the library. I found her curled up in a ball on the leather chair with her brown hair falling over her shoulders and part of her face. Her eyes were closed, and her lips were slightly parted as she muttered nonsense to herself. "Garret, Garret, please."
Who was she mumbling about? "Gar, I-I just want to help." Her breathing was too even for her to be awake, but she was talking like she holding a conversation. "Garret, I didn't touch the files, just leave it alone." Her voice was full of panic and she was starting to wake herself up with how hard her body had begun to shake.
Suddenly, her bright blue eyes snapped awake as she blinked and looked around. I noticed the book on the table, and decided to play it off. "I wondered where you'd disappeared to, but then I found you mumbling about how dumb Pip was."
She smiled as she sat up slowly. "Pip is dumb." She sucked her bottom lip in between her teeth quickly before releasing it. It was fucking hot and it pissed me off every time she did it. She stretched, pulling her shirt up revealing her tan, toned stomach and I couldn't help but stare while I wondered who 'Garret' was.
She said something about a shower, but I was too concentrated. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the sound of a phone ringing. Katherine was in her room, but she had left her phone in the library.
The ringing stopped, but started up again. I picked up the phone and took it with me into my office, watching the screen. The same number saved under the contact name of J. Ealous called twelve times in three minutes. Clever of Katherine to use a fake name, but calling someone Jealous was almost funny.
On the thirteenth ring, I decided to have a little fun with whoever was on the other line. I clicked Accept Call, but sat saying nothing. Lucky for me, the lad on the other side was too busy talking to notice.
"Why the hell haven't you been answering? I've been trying to call you for an hour! Ads, we may have got what we needed on Hunter, which means it might be time to quite spying and come home." I clenched my jaw and tried not to throw the phone against the wall and watch it shatter into a million pieces. Who the fuck did the little bitch think she was?
"Ads, Dylan and I really miss you, so you better start packing and get here soon. It's weird only having Dylan in the house since Garret's gone, and I haven't talked to you in over a month." Garret? Dylan? No fucking way!
I hung up the phone and threw it into the trashcan next to my desk. She was working for the River boys? No wonder she kept asking about them when we went over their file. Assuming it was Nathan River on the phone, she hadn't spoken to him since she started working for me, which meant she hasn't been spreading secrets yet.
She clearly doesn't know who she's working for if she thinks the River boys are saints. I went into the locked safe of important papers I kept behind a picture behind my desk, and pulled out the binder on the River boys. 'Ads' was about to get a rude awakening on her precious little asshats.
