"Are all the boxes in?" I ask, wiping the sweat from my brow.
"Yeah." Preston replies, collapsing on the ground. "Although we still have to get furniture... I don't know how we're gonna do that."
"Just leave it to me, kids!" Preston's mom says from the kitchen, putting away the utensils.
"I'd love to help." I offer.
"Oh, you don't have to, sweetie." She replies.
I smile. "It wouldn't feel right... I would really like to help you."
Mrs. Arsement smiles. "Preston, you've got a nice girlfriend there."
"I know, she's pretty awesome." He replies. I blush, grabbing a box full of plates and walk into the kitchen.
"You guys are too kind." I say.
"Well, I was just stating the obvious. You'd make a great wife someday, Caitlin." Mrs. Arsement compliments.
"Why, thank you." I reply, putting away some plates.
"It's getting late; Keeley started preparing some dinner over at our place; you guys should join us." Mrs. Arsement offers.
"Alright; sounds good." Preston responds.
"Let me just finish putting away these plates." I reply.
"You shouldn't overwork yourself, dear. You did enough work today." Mrs. Arsement says.
"I'm fine." I reply, putting the last couple of plates into the cupboard. "All done."
"Let's go!" Preston says, grabbing his keys.
----------------------------------------"Here, let me help." I say to Keeley, who is struggling with making the chicken.
"Thanks." She sighs in relief.
"No problem." I reply, putting some chicken breasts in egg yolk and bread crumbs, then setting them aside. "Can you cook them?" I ask.
"If I did, they would probably be charred." She replies. "Normally mom cooks them."
"I'll do it." I say, putting the chicken in a sprayed pan, and turning the stove on.
"Thank you!" She replies, washing her hands to join her brothers, who are in an intense Mario kart game.
Boys.
I chuckle, watching as Mr. And Mrs. Arsement join. A tear drops out of my eye at the heartwarming scene.
A family.
"Caitlin! You should join us!" Mrs. Arsement says.
"I'm fine... Actually, supper is ready." I reply.
"Alright... Guys! Supper!" Mrs. Arsement says. Immediately, the boys rush towards the food while Keeley, Mrs. Arsement and I wait (a little impatiently) to grab ours.
"Thank you, Keeley and Caitlin!" They all say.
"It was nothing." We both reply. I sit in between Preston and Keeley and enjoy the food.
"We did good." Keeley says, high-giving me.
I nod in agreement. "Yes, yes we did."
"So, Caitlin. How long have you been living in Texas?" Mrs. Arsement asks.
"Almost all my life." I reply. "I was born in Canada and moved here."
"With your parents?" She asks.
"Yeah." I reply.
"How are they?" She asks.
I tense up and the table goes silent. "Mom, I don't think now is the time for that." Preston says, grabbing my hand and squeezing it.
"Oh, okay." She replies. "I'm sorry, dear."
"I-it's fine." I reply. "They... Kinda just left me."
Mrs. Arsement looks enraged. "That's cruel! How could they do such a thing?!?!"
"Honey, call down." Mr. Arsement whispers. She calms down, and Preston starts another conversation.
"So Pax is coming up again..."
