"So, Max. Guess we won't be seeing each other much anymore. Things will go back to the way they were." I state.
"Yep." He sighs. "I'll miss you, but we'll visit each other, okay? I won't be that awful brother from before."
"Yeah." I reply, smiling.
"And make sure Preston doesn't get annoying." He adds.
"He's always annoying." I joke.
"Who's annoying?" A Texan accent asks.
"Nobody!" I reply, immediately darting behind Max.
"Come here, Caitlin!" Preston playfully says. "Tell meee!!!"
"Nooooo!!!"
"I told her that you were annoying." Max says.
"What?"
"Nooo Max whyyyyyy?!" I ask as Preston reaches and grabs my arm.
"You two are annoying together, now just go back to Texas already." Max waves, and I smile, waving back.
----------------------------------------
"Goodbye, everybody." I say, giving each one a heartfelt hug. "I'll call you guys when we get there."
"You better." Josh says."Yeah." I reply. I walk over to Vikk and hug him tightly. "I'm going to miss you a lot."
"I'm going to miss you too. Now go, before I start getting emotional." He jokes, and I start to tear up a little. "Go make your own adventures."
I bury my head into his neck one last time and hug him tightly. "Bye, Vikk. I love you."
"I love you too." He replies, and I slowly let go of him as an overwhelming ache takes hold of me.
"See ya soon!" I wave to everybody and grab Preston's hand.
"Bye!" They all wave, and Preston and I walk away, to the gates back to Texas.
----------------------------------------
Everybody is asleep, but I am up. I play with the locket around my neck; the same one that Alanna was wearing. A familiar pain hits me as I remember her.My best friend.
Alanna, would you be proud of me now?
I look out the plane window. Black. Just like my thoughts before everything happened. If I had to guess, my thoughts would probably be more of a beautiful pink. But there are moments where I spill a little blue into the color and make it darker.
I yawn, and before I know it, fall into a peaceful sleep.
----------------------------------------
I am shaken awake and I look around, regaining my surroundings. "Morning, sleepyhead." My favorite cactus says."Mooooorniiingggggg." I reply, yawning.
I pull out my sketch pad and doodle for a little bit; Preston looking over my shoulder every so often.
"What?" I ask as he clearly wants to see.
"Show meee!!" He begs. I sigh and hand him my sketch pad. He looks through and gasps, smiling. "Your artistic talent has grown! It's amazing, even for just a flower!" He praises.
"Thanks." I reply as he hands me my book back. "I've been taking classes."
"Wooww..." He replies. "You're amazing."
"Thank you." I reply, putting the sketch book away. And perfect timing too.
"Ma'am, we will be landing soon." A flight attendant says to the lady seated in front of us.
Preston and I look out of the window as we strap our seatbelt a again and the plane finally lands. We get off the plane, and I breathe in the oh so familiar air.
I'm back, Texas.
