I never explained to George what happened between Lucy and me the day she came to the Burrow, though he's asked several times. I hadn't heard from her since then, and I honestly don't plan to. We arrive at the station and board the train, tracking down the compartment Lee had saved for us. As we sit down, he begins to immediately ask if we'd heard from Lucy. Before I can open my mouth George cuts him off with a look and he raises an eyebrow but drops the subject, instead telling us what he did over the break.
Entering the castle, we head straight to the Great Hall to eat. Our usual seats unfortunately give us a full view of the Slytherin table. My eyes land on Malfoy, the slimy little git, talking with his friends. Without meaning to I scan the table for her but don't find her anywhere. It's not my problem. I return to eating until someone approaches our table. I look up to find Dumbledore, who asks me to step into the corridor. I follow him out and wait for him to speak to me.
"Did Miss Addams come to your house on Christmas day?" He asks.
"Yes, why?"
"She never returned to Hogwarts. I have not heard from her or received a reply from her family about her whereabouts. If you hear from her please let me know immediately."
I nod and feel a strange feeling in my gut but return to the feast and tell the boys about it.
A few weeks have gone by and Lucy has still not returned to Hogwarts. George, Lee and I have interrogated Malfoy several times but he genuinely doesn't seem to know where she is either. Her family doesn't know either and is requesting the information not spread to the papers. Dumbledore told me yesterday that Lucy's trunk was picked up by someone for her family. I'm trying not to care, but it's hard. I feel guilty. If I hadn't yelled at her she wouldn't have disappeared. I contacted Mum after I heard but she never saw Lucy leave our house. Hogwarts isn't the same without her. I miss getting woken up at all hours of the night because she can't sleep, the laughter and the pranks, waking up with her next to me. It's all gone and it's all my fault.
Umbridge has gotten out of hand. End of story. George and I have been discussing leaving Hogwarts to open our shop in Diagon Alley. All we need is an awesome way to make our grand exit. Lee, George, and I are currently sitting in our dormitory plotting our exit. Absently I look over to the spot she usually sits at in our room and sigh when I find it to be empty. Sometimes I expect to just turn around and find her there smiling at me.
"We'll find her Fred. It's just going to take time. It'll be easier once we leave Hogwarts. We'll have freedom to search for her." George says, giving me a look.
I just nod and turn back to our plan. We're leaving tomorrow afternoon.
The Whiz Bangs have all been set off, the portable swamp in place, and our brooms summoned. Everything has fallen perfectly into place. Students are cheering my brother and myself on as we jump onto the brooms and out of Umbridge's reach. George and I announce the opening of our store in the coming months and salute Lee before flying out of the castle and into the sky. We land in Diagon Alley in front of the storefront we bought with Harry's winnings from the Triwizard Tournament. I look up at the building and smile, we're out of Hogwarts and free to run our business. The lashings we'll get from Mum when she finds out are a bit sobering though. George unlocks the store and we walk in to look around. It's a decent sized store, a bit dusty from sitting empty for a while but definitely works for us. I can picture it already, bright and fun, full of our products and customers. I prop my broom against the wall by the door and notice someone taping a flyer to the window. She doesn't seem to realize that we're in here, muggle earphones running up to disappear behind her hair. Her hair is dark purple and shoulder length, with layers cut through it. It looked nice from what I can see. Her face is hidden by the flyer though.
"I wonder what she's advertising. She looks a little young to not be at Hogwarts or something, right?" George asks from his spot behind the counter.
"Who knows." I reply, still staring at her.
She turns from the window and I catch a glimpse of her eyes, ones I'd know anywhere.
"Lucy."
