Chapter 8

The rest of the weekdays passed, slowly and uneventful. Finally,  the weekend came and I didn’t have to rush off to class. I slept in until ten o’clock and I woke up to an empty room, so I assumed Amanda and Ally had already went to breakfast. I decided that I wanted to explore Hogwarts today. Surely the beauty of Hogwarts would get my mind off Draco and what Amanda had said last night.

I climbed out of bed like a snail emerging from it’s shell: slowly and steadily. As soon as I had completely crawled out, I made the bed and changed into my casual clothes. My Slytherin robes were comfy, but it was nice to be in normal clothes again. I put my hair up into a messy bun and brushed my teeth. Quickly I remembered that I should probably bring my wand, just in case. Then, I skipped down the stairs  to the common room area. No one was there, except Professor Snape. Suddenly, he turned his head in my direction and saw me standing there.

“Great,” I thought. “What’s he going to subtract points for this time?” I had been having a terrible week with Snape. In five days, I had managed to come to class late, spill a whole jar of bat spleens everywhere, and blow up a potion. I was absolutely terrible at potions. But, we had been given a notice yesterday that we would start working on a month’s long project with a partner of Snape’s choosing. Mostly everyone thought it was going to be terrible, especially Gryffindor. Snape hated them, wait no, Snape loathed them. Maybe it was the whole hate-hate relationship between our houses that Amanda had mentioned. But, I was looking forward to it. Maybe my partner could help me with potions.

“Ms. Diggory, what ever are you doing in the common room when everyone else is downstairs having breakfast?” he asked.

“I overslept,” I said quickly.

“Of course,” he said flatly, with a hint of disbelief. “Well you had better hurry up or our house will lose some valuable points.”

“Yes Professor,” I said and walked towards the door.  I didn’t want any trouble from him. I walked up the cold dungeon stairs to the Great Hall, with it’s huge doors and bursting light. I saw the owls delivering mail to people, which was pretty normal to me by now. I found my place next to Amanda at the Slytherin table. Draco and Blaise hadn’t come down yet and Ally was sitting by some other Slytherins. Amanda and Ally didn’t really like each other all that much so Ally had been becoming a little distant from her. And because I stuck with Amanda, Ally didn’t hang out with us often.

“Morning Shayla,” Amanda said. “Tired were you?”

“Exhausted,” I replied. “But much better now.”

“Good,” she said. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Draco and Blaise walking into the Great Hall. They were wearing casual clothes like us, except they looked beat up. They walked up to our table and sat across from us, like the rest of the week. It had been weird because Draco and I weren’t talking to each other.

“Where’ve you been?” Amanda asked.

“Quidditch practice,” Blaise said.

“That explains why you look so tired,” I said.

“Ya,” Blaise replied. I looked over at Draco. He gave me a scowl and I rolled my eyes.

“So I was thinking about breaking that stupid camera of Colin Creevey’s today,” Amanda said. “He has been snapping stupid pictures of the stupidest things all morning long.”

“I hate Creevey,” Blaise said. “He’s bloody annoying.”

“You got that right,” I said, going along with the crowd. Wow, it felt so good to just let go and be mean.
