I always thought I was normal. I played with the other boys. I did what normal boys did. I teased the girls with my friends. It was always girls they had crushes on. Then one day in 4th grade, I realized I wasn't like the other boys.
My first crush was when I was 7. It was the summer after first grade. I was playing with my friends. Teasing the neighborhood girls. When I saw a boy and his parents walking their dog. I had never seen the boy. He was cute. Not cute like a pet. Cute like I wanted to tell my friends and then we could go tease him. But as soon as I went to my friends, the boy was gone. So I forgot about it. I hadn't seen him since.
Then in 4th grade, a new kid had moved to our school. The teacher said that he had always lived here but he went to a private school. The boy looked familiar. That's when I had that thought again. "He's cute" I thought. It was then I realized that he was the boy from the summer 2 years ago. That was also the day I realized I didn't like girls the way my friends did. At that point I knew not to tell them. I knew my friends wouldn't like it if they knew I liked a boy. So I kept it to myself. I kept it to myself for a long time.
