Let It Roll

(Take, take a breath, we've got all the time in the world to get a grip on the fact that we don't last, but right now I want to watch the tide roll in with my best friends)

School had actually gone okay. No one was a dick to Alex, and even though we got stared at a lot and heard whispers. After practice, we went to Alex's so his parents didn't get too worried about how his first day back had gone, and after filling them in we went up to his room to hang. Alex turned his computer on to check his emails and the bands myspace page while I sat on his bed and lay back, looking at the ceiling, putting my headphones in and listening to Jimmy Eat World's Futures.

It was in the middle of Work when Alex suddenly started crying out "HOLY SHIT! WHAT THE...WOW!" I sat up and saw Alex literally jumping around the room "Fuck yes! WOOO!" I looked at him puzzled, taking my headphones out and putting my iPod on the side, "Ehrm...Alex? Why are you jumping around the room like a monkey?" He looked over at me, a huge smile on his face and his eyes were glistening "Matt Young from Amber Pacific just fucking emailed me!" He wants us to open for them when they come to Maryland next month! Fuck yes! I have to go call the others!" He said, running out the room while I sat on the bed, laughing at how crazy he was acting, but I was glad he seemed to be back to normal and going mental over one of his favourite bands.

I went down after Alex to watch as he called the guys, sitting myself at the kitchen table while Isobel pottered round and made us drinks, sitting down next to me confused at why Alex was acting the way he was. "What's that about?" She asked, nodding her head in Alex's direction while he dialled the guys. "Amber Pacific want the guys to open for them when they come to Maryland in a couple of weeks. Alex just got an email from their singer Matt Young and then came down to call the others." She nodded, taking a sip from her cup of tea before setting it down and smiling as her son called his friends to tell them the exciting news. "...If this goes well, they said they'd tell Hopeless about us! How cool would that be, an actual label might be interested in us Matt!" Alex practically yelled, changing Isobel's smile into a worried frown. She loved how into the band the guys were, and she knew Alex didn't want to go to college but I could tell being in a band wasn't at the top of her 'jobs' list for Alex.

After Alex finished telling the guys (who we arranged to meet up and celebrate with after dinner) he came over and sat at the table next to me while his mom began making the chicken and pasta we were having when his dad came home from work. He rested one arm on the table, putting the other hand on my thigh and squeezing it with the same smile he'd had on his face since reading the email over a half hour ago. I smiled and rested my head on his shoulder, slowly stroking his thigh that was moving up and down as he tapped his foot in excitement. The tapping gradually slowed to a stop, and he put his hand on top of mine that was on the table before shouting over to Isobel. "Hey Mom...there's this work experience thing every afternoon after Christmas break and the guys and I wanna do the band for work experience...is that okay?" She turned to face him and sighed. "We'll talk about this with your father and the other parents closer to the time okay sweetie." Alex sighed and nodded his head in agreement, taking his hand off my leg and wrapping it around me side, pulling me in close.

After dinner, Alex was allowed to drive us to the car park at Towson Town center where we waited for the others to show up. The sun was beginning to set, meaning the sky was filled with different shades of orange and pink, tonight looked magical. I sat on the from of Alex's car, leaning back and resting my head on the front window and I closed my eyes. I felt Alex lie back beside me, putting him hand in mine and humming a song I didn't recognise, making me turn my head to him and open my eyes. "New song?" I asked, and he smiled and nodded, moving his tongue over his lips slowly. "Maybe I'll let you hear it soon." he teased, making me chuckle. I got lost in his eyes, the sunset reflecting in the deep chocolate colour of them, it was so easy to forget where I was and what I was doing...

"Boo!" Shouted Jack from behind me, making me jump up and fall off Alex's car and onto the hard tarmack below, hitting the back of my head. "Jesus Jack! When will you learn you can greet your friends WITHOUT scaring them and causing injury?!" I yelled from the floor, my head too sore for me to even lift it. I heard Alex getting off the bonnet and shouting at Jack, but I couldn't make it out as the pain from my head was so intense. Suddenly I felt arms lifting me up, slowly putting me back on the bonnet and I lay their, keeping my eyes closed and letting out a light groan every so often. "Fucking hell Jack! You're gunna kill one of us one day!" I heard Rian complain as a hand I assumed was Alex's stroked my forehead and moved stray hairs out of my face. After a few minutes, I slowly began to sit up, rubbing my head that was still quite sore from the impact and I saw all the guys looking at me worried. "Guys, it's all right, just a sore head. Seriously Jack, you owe me an ice cream sundae for this." I pouted, glaring at his sulky face before we all began to laugh.

To celebrate, we all went to Rita's where Jack and Rian had got jobs over the summer. Alex and I went to the back with Jack so I could see what I wanted from the menu and annoy him by doing what he usually does. Rian, Kara, Grieco and Evan had ordered and were half way through eating there ice cream while I deliberated over what I wanted, Jack sighing every so often as I went between the chocolate overload and cookies and cream surprise. After about 10 more minutes, I went for the chocolate overload and Jack's ice cream had almost melted to nothing. Everyone chuckled as I cheerily licked away at mine while Jack pouted at his lame excuse for an ice cream.

We got back to the cars and Matt opened his boot, handing us each a Natty Boh after we'd finished our treats. I loved how we didn't celebrate by getting completely out of our minds drunk, we did little things like this, even if we would probably celebrate and get a little drunk at the weekend; after all it was a school night.

After our 'celebration' Alex drove us back home, parking his car on the drive before walking me over to my house and kissing me goodnight on the porch, his lips lingering over mine for a few moments before he took a step back and smiled at me. "Thanks for everything today, I don't know how I could have coped without you being there and then this...amazing oppertunity i just the icing on the cake." He chuckled, winking at me before kissing me once more. "Goodnight." He whispered in my ear before he began to walk off across the road to his, quietly singing a new song.

"Take, take a breath, we've got all the time in the world to get a grip on the fact that we don't last, but right now I want to watch the tide roll in with my best friends..."

I smiled, watching as he headed into his house and into the kitchen to join is parents, probably telling them about today in more detail as well as talking about the band, his passion. I went inside and up to my room, taking the pile of photographs off my dressor and looking through them. There were pictures going back to the first few weeks I knew the guys because I was in the process of making all the guys photo albums for graduation presents and I smiled as I came across a picture I'd taken of the guys at band practice, Rian in 'the zone' beating those drumskins as hard as he could, Zack with his black mop of hair covering his face as he played his base without a pick, Jack midway through one of his shaky spins and ofcourse Alex. His eyes were closed and he was holding the mic with both hands, I imagined the lyrics running through his mind as he sung, images flashing past at the same time as he recalled a memory.

The guys were amazing, and I knew they would go far. I couldn't wait for the doors to be opened for them so they could reach their full potential, and I knew it would start happening soon.
