We get back to the apartment shortly after lunch. Renesmee has to leave again to feed.
Our manager comes in the apartment just as Renesmee disappears.
"Mark," he strolls to the living room and hands me a bunch of DVDs, "here are the concerts you've done in the past. You oughta watch it. You would learn more about yourself from them."
"Uhm...Hyung," I sit beside him and he looks at me questioningly. "Is...uhm...is Ann still...?"
"Ann...." he sighs, "can you just forget about her? Leave her to us."
"I still don't remember anything about her...or us."
He stands up, "did they give you your old laptop?"
"No...why?"
"All your pictures are there," he takes out his phone, "I think I still have a picture of the both of you here."
He scans through the photos and shows me the screen. "Here, this is her."
The girl beside me on the photo has long wavy hair, much like Renesmee's but with a lighter blonde. She has chinky eyes, cute I might say, slanted up lightly at the edges. Her lips, smiling, were pink and a bit thin. I have my arm around her shoulder and I'm looking at her, laughing. While she smiles at the camera with her left hand on my cheek. We look really happy in the photo.
Suddenly I feel a longing deep inside me, as I look at her again on the photo I feel my insides ache. My temples start to pump and I can feel a sharp pain at the back of my head.
"Are you ok?" Our manager comes beside me upon seeing my pained face.
"I think so," I massage the part of my head that is throbbing.
"Are you having these pains often?"
"Yeah...much like 4...5 times a day."
He stands up and dials a number on his phone.
"I need to take him to Dr. Lee." "Yes" he talks to somebody on the other line.
Then he comes to me, "Let's go," he grabs my hand and we walk out the apartment.
"Where are we going?"
"The doctor."
We get in the van at the basement of the building and he drives us to a small clinic 30 minutes away.
"Put this on," he hands me a cap and pulls down the flap to cover my face. "Just look down, you don't want people recognizing you."
"Wait," I say before he could open the door of the car. "I need to tell Renesmee where I am."
He sighs, "Ok."
'Baby, the manager and I just needed to check on something. Be home soon.' I don't want to tell her I'm in pain. I don't want her to worry.
"Let's go," I say as I get down the van and try to be inconspicuous. We walk in a small clinic and, with a nod at the nurse, we walk in a small room at the end of the hall.
"Mark," a man wearing a doctor's coat shakes my hand. "I'm Dr. Lee. Take a seat."
We sit comfortably on the couch in the middle of the room and the doctor sits on a smaller settee.
"I've been informed about what happened to you. How long have you been having these headaches?"
"Ever since I came back to Korea."
"I see. Can you lay on this bed," he points to a small cot in one side of the room, "I need to check on something."
I lay nervously as he checks the back of my head. "You have a wound here," touching the small scar just inches behind my ear. "It was neatly sewn. Did you go to a hospital?"
"No. My friend...girlfriend...she's good at this."
"Oh...so does it hurt here?"
"No."
"Where does it usually hurt?"
"Here," I point at the back of my head above the wound.
"I see," he rubs his chin with his hands. "You need to do a scan, x-ray...and let's see what comes out."
He leads us to an adjoining room and talks to the radiologist.
They let me lay on a cold bed surrounded by big apparatuses. My heart beats faster, I'm not liking this place. I close my eyes and let them do their work.
"I'll call you as soon as we get the results," the doctor shakes our hands and we go back to the apartment.
"Here, down this," the manager hands me a pain killer and a glass of water. "I think you need to rest first, let's just do this tomorrow."
He leaves the apartment just when Renesmee comes down the stairs. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," I take the bottle of pills and hide it in my pocket, but not before she sees it.
"What's that?" She grabs my hand and pulls out the bottle. "Pain killers? You still sick? Why didn't you tell me?" She looks really concerned. "I'm sorry, Mark, I should've taken you to the doctor sooner." She turns around and slowly walks back up the steps.
"Hey, Ren," I run after her. "It's not your fault. Nothing is your fault. You tried to save me. Ok?" I stop at the middle of the stairs and I let her face me. "Baby, look at me," she looks up to my eyes, her tears starting to form. "Everything that happened, everything that's happening....none of these is your fault. So, please...don't even think you're responsible."
She nods and with her head bowed she walks up again.
I run up and missed a step, my foot slipped and I roll down the stairs with a loud thud. I hit my head on the floor and I can see blood flowing from below my ear to my neck down to my shirt.
"Mark," Renesmee is beside me in a flash. "Mark, are you ok?"
"I....Shit...my head hurts," I try to get up but the pain in my head pulls me back to where I am sprawled. I look up and see Renesmee looking down on me with tears in her eyes. I reach up to her and put my palm on her cheek. Then everything goes black.
