Benson's POV
flashback..
"You've got 2 choices, Ben: lose your powers or go to where we send you willingly." This was their method of keeping my mouth shut. The COT didn't want me telling other people like me about what I found out and what happened to Britney.
"I'll leave," I told them that day. Getting stripped of my powers was asking for a death wish. I heard that it was a very painful procedure. They strapped you into a chair before attaching wires into your head. Then they flipped a switch and sent electricity currents through the wires. They left it like that for an hour or so while you were fully conscious the entire time. Those who survived... I don't know whether I should say that they were lucky or not because they had side effects after. Their body slowly began to deteriorate in withdrawal. Death soon came after.
It took them only one day to set everything up and I was not even a bit surprised. I had no family nor relatives. I had no one, I was an orphan. No one would notice my disappearance. No one that cared.
I was put in a van 3,000 miles away to a city I've never heard of. A COT agent named Bobby came along with me to play the role of my dad and to make sure I did nothing suspicious.
The following day, I started school. Bobby dropped me off at the corner and I went inside, looking for the office.
◈ ◈ ◈
After the lady at the desk handed me my schedule and a map of the campus, I left the office and heard the loud voices of an argument drift down the hallway. Slightly curious, at what it was about, I walked in the direction of it.
There was a crowd of students watching a girl with chestnut colored brown hair having a tense discussion with a fairly tall black haired guy and another girl dressed in clothes that were way too short to be allowed in school.
I could only catch bits and pieces of their conversation since I was in the very back of the large crowd.
"..... never liked you.."
".. best friends!"
".... using you...."
The bell rang and the crowd scattered. Everyone left except for one person. I hid myself behind the edge of a section of the lockers nearby and stayed behind to see what the chestnut colored hair girl was doing.
She was on the floor crying in her hands. Her sniffs echoed down the empty halls.
I didn't make a move to leave or to help her and just watched from where I was standing. I sensed something different about her, but I wasn't sure why yet.
She stayed there for awhile before she finally calmed down. She slowly got up from the ground and picked up her backpack. She started to walk away and I found myself following a few steps behind her.
◈ ◈ ◈
I watched from afar as she ran by herself on the track.
Less than 30 minutes later, she stopped, completely worn out and laid down on the grass nearby. I took this as my chance to speak with her and find out what I was sensing. I stood in front of her, blocking the sun from her face and waited for her to notice.
She took notice quite quickly and sat up. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stared up at me. What was he doing here? Her eyes grew larger in size as she concentrated her eyes on me. Why can't I hear anything? I should be hearing his thoughts right now.. we're having eye contact so what was wrong?
I kept my expression the same even though I was totally in surprise at what I just discovered. She was a Teli just like Britney was.
Teli were people who have the ability to read people's mind. In most cases, Teli were males. I've only met one other person who was a Teli and was female- Britney, and things didn't go so well with her. That was the whole reason why I was sent here.
◈ ◈ ◈
back to present...
Her breathing became steady as she quickly fell asleep on my shoulder. I stared at her peaceful face and the urge to want to protect her grew. She was a female Teli. If the COT were to find out... I can't let that happen.
