Abbie's POV

He shrugged his shoulders. "I'm just the new kid in school who wants to be your friend. I want to be someone you can trust, talk to, come to when you're in trouble. I want to be that person who can be there for you whenever."

"Why?" I just had to ask. "Why do you want to be my friend?" I trusted the wrong people once. I didn't want to risk it happening again. The fact that I couldn't read him made it even worse, I didn't even know what was going on in his head. Were his words sincere?

"Because I need to protect you," Benson said in a low whisper.

"Protect me?" What was he saying? "Why do you need to protect me?" I looked over at him and waited for his response.

He was quiet for a few seconds, staring at the floor unable to keep eye contact with me.

"Are you going to answer me?" I asked, growing impatient. "Why do you need to protect me?"

"I need to protect you from Calvin. Don't tell me you didn't see how angry he was in the cafeteria earlier. You need me by your side in case he comes after you to hurt you," he explained.

"I can take care of myself perfectly fine."

"No, you can't," he argued. "You couldn't even stop him when he was kicking you. What if he tries to do something worse than last time? I can't let that happen."

Benson's face was serious.

"Fine, I'll let you just for the next couple of days," I agreed. Deep inside, I was scared of what Calvin was capable of doing. Knowing that Benson would be there in case anything happened made me feel more at peace.

A small smile spread across his cheeks, revealing a dimple I didn't know existed. My heart couldn't help but flutter. I had to admit that his looks were above average compared to the other guys at school. He was pretty cute with his brown eyes and ruffled hair that fell over his dark eyebrows and don't forget the dimple I just discovered.

"Let's grab something to eat before lunch ends," he suggested, not noticing that I was staring at him.

I nodded and we went to a snack cart nearby.

The bell signalling the end of 6th period finally rang. I've been staring at the clock that hung above the whiteboard for the past 5 minutes, watching and waiting for the long hand to hit the 11 which was when class ended.

I slung my backpack over my shoulder and followed behind the other people who wanted to leave the class as much as I did.

Halfway to the door, someone shoved me from the side, making me lose my balance. Luckily I caught myself before I could greet the dirt and dust that was on the ground and continued walking. I didn't even take more than 3 steps when something else happened- I got flattired.

I felt a foot step onto my right heel, taking off both my sock and my sneaker. I decided to ignore it and kept walking but then the person did it to my other heel. I could hear snickers from behind me so I slowly turned around.

A guy with long, shaggy hair smiled shamelessly at me. "Is there a problem?" he asked me, flashing his teeth. I got her right on the spot... both her sock and shoe came off... Mann I have such good aim..

"Yes there is," I said with all the courage I could muster. "You don't know how to walk." Normally, I would fake laugh and hurry away, but today, for some reason, I didn't. I actually spoke up instead of holding it in.

"I don't know how to walk??"

"Yeah maybe you should go see a doctor about it."

His friends, who stood behind me, held back laughs.
