Finnick tells me he's going to go see Annie. I decide to tag along.
"What's wrong, Annie?" He asks.
"I've been waiting for you all day Finn. That's my problem." She answers.
"Look, I'm sorry."
Annie huffs a breath.
"I am. There was just some V.I.P. in the Capitol. They just had to meet the famous Finnick O'dair."
"And this V.I.P. just so happened to be a woman."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Who do you think I am?! To naive? Or just too stupid to see what's really going on?!"
"Annie I-"
"I'm not just some idiot school girl. You've been called into the Capitol every other week. Don't think I don't see how those other girls look at you. Don't think I don't here the rumors."
"Look, you know I hate this just as much as you and Melissa do. But, you can't just say 'no' to the Capitol."
"Yeah, I'm sure its just torture to have the Capitol get in your way every time you turn around. Its probably so hard."
"But, I'd rather be here with you. With Melissa. You do believe me, right?"
"I used to. Now I don't know what to believe, anymore. You've changed."
"Annie, you have no idea what its like for me now." Finnick says as he gets up to throw a rock.
He's so filled with anger, he sits down in exhaustion.
Annie, gets up to comfort him.
"Then, tell me, Finn. Help me understand."
"I can't" Annie peels his hand off of his eyes.
"Hey, c'mon, when did we start keeping secrets from each other?"
"All I have now, Annie, is secrets. I can't tell you. Even if I could, I'd just end up losing you, one way or another."
"There's nothing you could say, that would make me leave you."
"Is that a bet?"
"No. Its a promise." Annie leans Finnick into her chest.
"Its okay Finn."
"Yeah, Finn. We love you." I say.
"How much did you hear?" He asks raising his head.
"Everything."
"Oh, no." He says.
"Calm down. Its not like I'm stupid enough to tell anybody."
He settles down, and lays his head on the sand of the beach.
