They unlock the cage where Peeta and I sit, with Annie right in front of it. I instantly jump up, and tackle her. My fingers are locked on her throat.
I'm going to kill Annie Cresta.
I feel someone's hands on my arms, trying to make me lose my grip.
"Melissa, stop!" Peeta yells.
"She's a mutt, Peeta! I don't want her to hurt you!" I answer.
"Melissa! She's not a mutt!"
"She's a mutt!" I say with tears in my eyes. "She can't hurt you! She can't hurt me any more than she already has!"
Annie has just closed her eyes when Peeta rips my grip from her.
"What were you thinking?" He asks with tears in his eyes.
"She's a mutt, Peeta. You have no idea what she's done." I say.
"She's not a mutt. She's not."
"You don't understand. You just don't."
"I think I do."
Tears start to fill my eyes. Not because I don't think that Annie's a mutt, but because he's being so nice. The one thing that throughout our conversation, I thought I wouldn't get.
Kindness.
I hug Peeta. He's being kind to me after what just happened.
Kindness is all a person needs.
