Shadow's POV
I stared at the bag of deliciousness sitting in front of me, the scent of her perfume lingered and mixed with the pleasant smell of baked goods and coffee. I tried to process exactly what just happened. First I was walking to the scrap-house. I knew it was around closing time for the restaurant and he would be putting out leftovers. My stomach was aching with hunger. I just ate some yesterday. Usually, I can go for a week without a lot of food.
I was in somewhat of a hurry and wasn't looking and ran into someone. Her heel caught on the sidewalk and she almost fell. Quickly I grabbed her arm to steady her. I knew from the nails that dug painfully into my arm who it was. Those were the same nails I admired last night. Her green eyes met mine. I blurted out an apology. Her glare dug deep into my soul as she looked at me annoyed.
"It's alright," She said. I felt my heart stop at that beautiful face of hers. She was looking at me. Again! I could feel my body shaking. I hoped desperately that she didn't notice.
"Next time watch where you're going?" She snapped. I stared at her wide-eyed. My heart began pounding and my palms started to get sweaty. Suddenly I felt like a small bug she was about to squish with her shoe. I didn't say anything, I just stared at the ground.
"Are you hungry?" She asked. YES!! My subconscious screamed.
"No ma'am," I lied. I felt weird accepting things from people. I knew that I needed help. I just like to make a living on my own. I started to walk past her when she grabbed my arm. She pulled me into the cafe we were standing outside of. I didn't fight, I just went along with it. The cashier smiled at her and welcomed her. When she saw me her face fell. I simply looked down at the floor while the woman clutching my arm talked to her, feeling utterly embarrassed and ashamed to be standing next to a beautiful woman while looking like this. Hell, just being in her presence while smelling like a walking garbage can was embarrassment enough. After she paid she led me to a booth. I slid in and kept my eyes down. My heart was hammering so loud I'm sure everyone could hear it.
No words were spoken until the cashier came over. She handed the woman her order and the woman thanked her. I sat there frozen and confused. Why did she bring me here? My question was answered when the woman pushed the muffins and tea in front of my face. A napkin followed shortly after and she left. I didn't move until I heard the door chime signaling she left. I looked up at the note. She left her number and a note saying "Call Me If You Need Anything x"
That's cute. She put a little 'x' there. I've never seen anyone do that before. I smiled and slipped the note into my pocket. I felt weird being in here so I grabbed the stuff and left. I could smell the delicious muffins through the bag. That was really sweet of her. Most people would flip me off and go on about their business. Not buy me tea and muffins. I wasn't far from my alley. I found my favorite hiding spot and opened the bag of muffins. I moaned out loud. They were fresh mini chocolate chip muffins. I took a small bite out of one and my eyes rolled to the back of my head.
"Holy fuck." I groaned. I ate the rest of it and grabbed another. I took a sip on the tea and sighed in pleasure. It was amazingly sweet with a hint of cinnamon. Gosh, this is so good. I rolled up the sack of muffins and sipped on my tea. I didn't want to eat them all at once. It's better if I spread out the time I eat them so they'll last.
"Hey. Give me that." Some guy said.
"No, get your own." Another guy spat. I peeked from around my hiding spot to see two homeless guys. I usually see them around the prostitute area a lot. One's name is Tito. The other is known for having multiple personalities as well. You never know who you're dealing with, kind of like Jilly Bob but not in a comical way. More like in the terrifying, who-am-I-going-to-accidentally-piss-off-today kind of way. Titto tucked a bag into his jacket when the other grabbed for it. It was never safe to have things around other homeless people. They're always trying to take it from you. It's worse with the junkies. They'll rob you and pawn whatever they get. Anything to get a quick fix.
"C'mon dude. I'm starving." He pleaded.
"So am I Gale." Tito rasped. I haven't met 'Gale' yet. I wonder if he's violent. I know Nicky, his better personality, is nice and shares food with me sometimes. Gale pushed Titto causing him to fall. He went for the bag and Titto hit him in the face. I watched as both of them struggled. People would glance in the alley but kept on walking. Everyone is used to things like this. It's normal seeing people like is fighting over something as dumb as garbage. I pulled out a muffin and nibbled on it while watching them. That was a mistake. They both turn like vampires smelling fresh human blood. I paused with the muffin right outside my mouth. Everything happened so fast. They both got up and ran towards me. I abandoned my tea and grabbed my bag of muffins. I slipped out of my hiding spot that proved not to be a good one and started running. To where? No clue. Especially since I couldn't outrun them. I didn't exercise much and I don't have any energy to fight them off. I continued to run. I didn't look back. I could hear them calling for me. I clutched the muffins to my side as I ran down the long alley. Finally, I made it out of the alley. I didn't know which direction to turn. Too late. I felt hands snatching my bag and pushing me at the same time. I stumbled into the road. The last thing I saw was headlights coming straight toward me.
