This is... You Can't Fight Fate....
It was hard to see through the sheets of rain that were coming down as I drove down this dark road, but it was a road I was familiar with so I wasn't worried. I wanted to drive to clear my head & ended up heading toward my best friend, Marissa's place. She didn't even know I was coming, so I wasn't even sure she would be home. I really didn't care anyway. I wasn't sure I'd end up at her place, I just knew I needed to drive. I needed to run from the demons that were in my home. I do wish I had checked the weather before I left, because I couldn't clear my head & really think, if I had to concentrate on my driving.
My headlights fell on a car, on the side of the road as I neared a curve, so I slowed down. As I passed the car, I looked to see if there was anyone in it, just in case someone might be in trouble. I saw no one, so I sped up to my previous speed.
I had the volume on the radio turned down so I could concentrate, but I felt like I should pull over until the rain slowed down. My wipers were on high speed & they really were doing nothing except make an annoying noise. I wasn't doing the speed limit & I probably wasn't even close, but I was always one to be safe rather than sorry. Granted, my life lately has led me to be a little more daring & now I was finding myself taking more risks than I used to. Maybe it was because I knew how short life could be.
I felt my forehead crease as I concentrated on being able to see the road through the curtain of rain that hit the road in front of me. As I went around another slight curve, my lights landed on a dark figure & it made me jump, instinctively braking. The figure seemed to me a man wearing a dark coat & he was walking backwards, looking as if he was trying to avoid the rain pelting him in the face. His head was down but as I got closer, he lifted his eyes & I could see he was very handsome. The car I had seen a few miles back was probably his. He didn't have his thumb up or even look like he expected me to stop, but I slowed to a stop beside him.
I pressed the button to roll down my passenger window & leaned as he stopped walking & squinted, looking inside my car. "Is that your car back there?" I asked, loudly & he nodded, looking very confused. "It's a long walk to the nearest town. Get in & I'll give ya a lift."
The stranger blinked a few times as he studied my face. "You sure?" He asked, sounding hesitant & I nodded, giving him a warm smile. Another moment of hesitation then he finally got in & I rolled the window up as he closed the door. "You're very trusting." He chuckled, wiping the rain off his face.
"Are you a murderer?" I asked, leaning on my door & he shook his head. "A rapist?" I had a tiny hint of a smile on my face as he shook his head, quickly in response. "A republican?" I asked, a serious expression on my face & he laughed out loud. It wasn't even really a laugh, but more of a sound of surprise & amusement.
"Uh... No."
"Good. Then you're safe." I grinned at him & he finally smiled with teeth. They were a tiny bit crooked, but in an adorable way. There was something about his smile that made me feel good & comforted, two things I welcomed, right now.
He wiped his hand on his pants, then held it out toward me. "I'm Nick."
"Demi." I shook his hand & felt a weird sensation throughout my body.
"Thank you for stopping. I really can't believe you did, but I'm so appreciative."
"I felt bad because this rain is coming down so hard & you're dressed in dark clothes, I didn't want you to get hit because people couldn't see you. That would have been on my conscious."
He laughed again, slightly nodding his head. "Well thank you for, literally, saving my life."
So.... what did ya think? What do you think will happen in this story? I love reading guesses & theories!
