“Daniel! Hurry get in here!”
Daniel ran into the room looking quite worried, “What's wrong? Is it the baby? Are you going into early labor? Do you want more ice cream?”
I giggled slightly at his reaction, “No, come here you goof.”
After he had crossed the room and sat on my bed next to me I grabbed his hand and placed it lightly on my slightly, swollen stomach, “Do you feel it?” I whispered.
He looked at me confused for a moment before a look of surprise flashed across his face. He smiled up at me and then lay his head on my stomach to feel the movement better. “Are you sure this is the baby? I mean you're not just digesting something are you?”
I smiled and idly played with his hair, “I'm sure.”
He lifted his head off of my stomach and looked at me, “But how are you sure?”
I shrugged, “Just a feeling.”
Daniel nodded and placed his head back on my stomach. He began tapping out a rhythm that I didn't realize until after a minute or so was in time to the baby movements.
“Do you know what I think this is?” he asked.
“What?”
“I think he's getting the hiccups.”
“Daniel...”
“Just think about it. It's fairly regular. And it comes in short bursts. I think it's the hiccups.”
“That's not what the Daniel was for.”
He flashed me a charming smile, “What?” he asked innocently.
“You know that we don't know the sex yet. And you shouldn't get your hopes up about a boy. It could be a girl for all you know and I would hate to have you disappointed.”
“You're just saying that because you want another girl in the family.”
“Not true. And you just want a boy to do all those manly things with like, um, fishing?”
He laughed at me, “No.. and fishing? Why do you want it to be a girl anyway?”
I smiled softly as I ran my fingers through his hair, “I think a daddy's girl would do you good.”
He smiled, “I like the thought, but I have enough trouble taking care of you. I don't need another girl running around. I need a little man to help me take care of his mother.”
I just rolled my eyes at him as he smiled cheekily up at me, “Are you ready to go to your appointment?” he asked softly.
I nodded and he softly kissed my stomach, “Ready to go see the doctor, little man?” he asked as he helped me off of the bed.
I just shook my head and let him gently pull me down the stairs and out the door. The ride to Doctor Fuller's office was becoming very familiar. It seemed to take a few seconds to get there rather than half an hour.
Janet, the receptionist smiled at us as we walked into the office, “How are you Taryn?” she asked kindly.
I smiled back, “I'm doing okay. The little bugger has had the hiccups for the last 45 minutes. It's starting to get annoying.”
Janet smiled, “They tend to do that. Are you still sure that you don't want to know the sex of the baby?”
Daniel shook his head from behind me at the same time that I nodded, “I don't want to know,” I said as I reached behind me to hit Daniel lightly on the head.
