Pic of Iris on the side>>

The day of my fifth birthday I met my best friend. I lived in a small coastal town called Coral Cliffs on the edge of South Carolina and it was sort of a custom in our town to not bring your kid to the beach until their fifth birthday. So that day my mother, Angela, my twin brother, Josh and I all packed up our beach toys, sunscreen, and towels and did our right of passage.

When we got there the beach was deserted because there was suppose to be a storm that day. But our family was kind of crazy, and instead of staying indoors like normal family's would we were usually the one you would see dancing in the street in the middle of a thunder storm. I pulled my mother's hand so that we could all run into the water together, "Iris, dear, mommy's tired so she can't go in the water today, but you go have fun with your brother." She said in her soft musical voice but then coughed loudly into a hanker chief she had been carrying around recently. Josh of course took off running into the water but I walked along the shoreline letting the water wash across my feet while also keeping my mom in the corner of my eye so I could see her.

After a while of not paying attention I had wondered so far that I couldn't see my mother or brother anymore, I also noticed that the storm we saw brewing was in full swing and whipped my hair around my face. I turned around to go back when I heard a cry for help. Me being only five I didn't know what I could do but I knew I wasn't just going to leave a person out here in this kind of weather since it was basically a typhoon.

I ran along the shoreline, "Help me, please! Over here behind the rocks!" I quickly ran to where I heard the high shrill voice until I saw a person, she had long blond hair and big blue eyes.  As my eyes traveled further down her body I noticed she had on a really pretty swimsuit top that looked like it was made out of pink seashells. Then I noticed something shiny in the corner of my eye.

I looked down and saw she had a pink tail that sparkled even without sunlight, then I noticed that one of her fins at the end of her long tail was caught underneath a big boulder. "Please help me, my fin really hurts and I can't lift this rock. My father is furious, he expected me home hours ago!"

I nodded then stepped closer to the large rock and attempted to move it. My tiny arms made it barely move a centimeter. "Use that piece of wood over there!" She pointed to a thick branch that must of fell and rolled onto the beach. I ran to get it then came back and stuck the sharp edge of the branch under the rock then I pulled down on the part that was sticking up in the air.

Thankfully the stick moved it just enough for her to get her fin free. I saw that it was bleeding but instead of red the color of her blood was silver. She put her fin in the water and a small light began to glow where the cut was but after a couple seconds the light vanished and her tail was back to normal.

"Thank you so much!" She said squealing with happiness. After she said that the waves quieted down and the dark clouds in the sky lifted until we could see rays of sunshine again.

"My name is Adamaris but you can call me Mari, what's your name?" She said in a voice that sounded like a bell.

"My name is Iris." I said in a quiet voice. She drifted closer to the rock I was sitting on and held my hand, "You don't have to be scared of me, I won't hurt you. I just want to be your friend and thank you for saving me. I'm six, how old are you?" She said and I awed at the musical sound of her voice.

"I'm five, um is your father the king of the sea?" She smiled happy that I was finally opening up to her. "Oh no, but he is the king's advisor." I smiled. I always dreamt of meeting a mermaid after watching the movie. I had so many questions to ask. "Do you have lots of sisters?" I said excitedly. She shook her head, "No, it's just me and my older brother, Tyne."

It all went downhill from there. Like me Mari had many questions to ask me to and soon we became fast friends. At sunset my mother found me and told me it was time to go. Mari came out of her hiding spot and told me to come back here tomorrow so we could talk again. I agreed and left.

As the years went on it was safe to say that we were best friends. She would take me underwater with her and show me fish and plants and other things that I never even knew existed and I would bring her things from my house and buy her food at the supermarket so that she could try it.

At the same time my mom got sicker. We learned that she had had cancer in her ovaries for a long time and it happened shortly after she gave birth to my brother and I. My mother refused any treatment and when I was nine she passed away and was buried next to my father.

My brother and I had to move with my grandmother who thankfully lived in the same town as us so I was able to keep my friendship with Mari.

Then when I graduated from High School I told Mari that it would be harder to see her since I was accepted into University of Missouri. I knew she was upset but so was I, so I was hurt when the next few weeks she didn't come to see me.

After awhile the summer ended and I never saw her again.

So I moved on with my life but I always kept my best friend in the back of my mind.
